Hi everyone!
Good and bad news at once. The non working diamond tweeter is changed now and the speaker is back in perfect shape, shininig with crisp highs The other speaker, which I thought has some king of problem with the high frequencies is now confirmed to be a problem ! With test track which has not more than 3-3.5kHz the tweeter is making some rustling noise. The HF filter should cut everything below 4kHz. Previously i was not sure if the ears or the room acoustic is playing with me but now with isolated track it's obvious the filter is the problem. The other speaker tweeter is in absolute silence with this track at every amp volume level. Swapped the channels to be absolutely sure and yes the problem is in the same speaker. Got the track played on other 3way speakers - there is no sound from the tweeters there. I am very dissapointed from the quality control in B&W nowdays. Not mentioning the waiting time for repair. The speakers are brand new - produced in Dec 2020 , delivered in Feb 2021 to me. |

High-pass filter is not a brick wall, so even with 24 dB/oct (4th order) filter tweeter crossed at 4 kHz will get quite some "music" at 3.5 kHz. If tweeter is working properly - that's not a problem, of course.

my bad. the highest freq of the file is 2.6 kHz.
of course the filter is not a brick wall (it is just a single expensive mundorf capacitor ), but having the comparison with the other matched speaker and some others 3 way ... there is nothing coming to their tweeters. And even if it is ok such frequencies to come to the tweeter the sound produced is far away from normal. With music it feels like some distorted echo, which is not apparent for every ear and not very easy to describe, but with the proper test track it is right in the nose. Anyway the ball is back to B&W tech. |

The point of my post is that I think the problem is the tweeter and not the crossover network.
I hope it will be fixed soon Last edited by Delija; 05-22-2021 at 07:23 PM. |

Fwiw, the most common mode of failure for diamond dome tweeters seems to be mechanical - shattering, which has been addressed with the D3 models, and other failures due to thermal stress or QC issues are quite rare. It would be wise to get the power amp checked out to make sure it's working to spec and unconditionally stable. |

Thanks for all the ideas.
The first step will be the change of the tweeter. Afterwards will check the amp parameters. I am still afraid the finish will be with crossover filter change. Will keep you posted. Going back to the first tweeter change. There was some inconsistency in the color of the membrane which can be discovered only with the grill off. I don’t know if it is some problem with the “diamond” coating process or some moisture(condensation) appeared during the transportation process in the winter. [how can attach a picture in the post here?] At the time of delivery there was a bit of condensation on the turbine head. |
