I'm glad you liked it, but obvious you didn't read it.

You’re right, I didn’t - mea culpa. I read the headline, saw the byline and it seemed fairly clear there was going to be a serious political slant, and decided life is too short.

So, because this headline — 🦊 Business panel says economic shutdown worse than the virus, touts “U.K. strategy” of letting everyone get infected immediately

causes you to attack the news channel you don't like....................and you didn't even read it.

Brief daily visits to the grocery store, one to my local hi fi store and a shopping center, and church, which are now shut for services ,and being super OCD at work. That's all it's been for the last few weeks. And always wearing a pollution mask when out, though that's to stop winter bronchitis. And only now are they shutting pubs, etc. I feel Italy is going to be our closest European neighbor. At least they had the excuse in a greater way of downplaying things back then, not so us, the train has been roaring down the track lit up with lights and beeping it's horn continually, to no avail. 54 confirmed ( ie only those they have tested) cases in my borough of 445,000 people. It was 6 ten days ago.

To put things in perspective:
"CDC (United States) estimates that influenza 2018-2019 was associated with more than 35.5 million illnesses, more than 16.5 million medical visits, 490,600 hospitalizations, and 34,200 deaths."

The official figures above are of course tragic but...
What is it that makes so many countries go crazy this time? Is it because it has a name and not just "the flu"? If 35 000 deaths are "normal" from the flu, what are the predictions from Corona?

Yes....... one should definitely read. Always best to know your enemy.

Believe Italy was over 600 deaths yesterday. Very sad. The post-mortem on all of this will be very much a "learning/teaching" tool for us for the future (if the science folks involved in same aren't all fired first).

How is all this is going down in Russia? They seem no more transparent than is China or the USA. But, perhaps this is a case of "careful what you ask for........"

The CDC estimated 200,000 to 1.7 million deaths depending on a variety of scenarios and what mitigating actions we take.

Part of what renders it something other than "normal" is the exposure of a vast number of healthcare workers who have to make do with makeshift or "recycled" presumed-to-be protective masks or none at all. That potentially affects the health of both patient and healthcare worker as well as the availability of the latter when the "protection", such as it is, breaks down, doesn't "work" to begin with, or simply doesn't exist and sends the worker him/herself home sick or into the ICU (assuming that there's a bed and ventilator available), removing him or her from the treatment-and-care firing line.

Assuming you have that ability...........

Our Current Narrative Lacks Crucial Data
We do have data, to some extent, from China and Italy. Yet there are many questions about the accuracy of the data from China, particularly given the Chinese government’s initial denial of the illness. Yet data from China has been provided and was swiftly reported in academic journals.

Papers that normally take months to be carefully vetted, accepted, and published are now being published with remarkable speed. Less than a year ago, BMC Public Health published an article concluding that because there are several methods used to calculate the key measures, comparisons between studies and countries is difficult. Yet statisticians are still doing the precise comparisons warned against because in the COVID-19 era, everything is permitted because the baseline understanding of the disease is so limited.

In Italy, it appears that the crisis (for now) is localized in the Northern Italy, mostly in the Lombardy region. Why? Why aren’t patients being transferred to other regions? Are other regions in Italy also in crisis?

There have been explanations as for why Lombardy has been hit harder than other regions, but these have not been the focus of reporting. In Italy, the media reports heartrending stories about providers forced to condemn patients to die because of a lack of intensive care beds, but little else beyond raw numbers of cases and deaths.

It’s this image of people dying that drives decisions. Northern Italy’s “hospital meltdown” is shocking and upsetting, but should not necessarily be alarming for the rest of the world. Northern Italy has been hit hard, but the rest of Italy is largely waiting at home like the rest of us.
