Listened yesterday to a part of the very good Crossroads Festival IV on Blue Ray ( image is pretty poor actually but the sound is fine ).
The realism of the guitars, the voices, the bass, was just too good to be true. I could play it at very high volume without any strain or aggressive sounds. The Harbeths delivered a lifelike and super natural presentation. I could have been in this concert hall. They amaze me on each and every recording I throw at them.

Apart from the mids, which are miles ahead richer an clear and lifelike on the Harbeths than on the Wilsons ( I can understand clearly lyrics on the Harbeths while some are like an unknown language on the Wilsons) my BIGGEST surprise is for the bass.
The Harbeths bass performance is all above the one of the WP8's. And this applies to deep bass, bass and high bass. I get much more power and extension and richness on the Harbeths. To a point where you can wonder if the highly unresonant and dampened Wilson cabinets do not actually suck the life of the bass in many recordings. And the richness of timbre in the bass of the Harbeths make the Wilsons sound like sono speakers. No kidding.

Jerôme, it's very exciting experience you are describing. Congratulations.
I wonder if you would be happier with the Devore speakers you were about to buy. I guess not!...

Congrats on the purchase of the Harbeths!!
I've owned the M40's in Eucalyptus for some time, everytime I consider upgrading I just can't let my Harbeths go. These speakers just draw you into the music, it's easy to forget you're listening to speakers. I have tried pretty much every stand available, I now have custom 4 post Sound Anchor stands and they are the best of the bunch. I ordered them 14" tall which places the tweeter at ear height. Just my opinion but I'm convinced that Mac amplification is not a great match with the Harbeths. The big woofer needs an amp that really controls it, and having tried even the 501 monoblocks I was not satisfied. I'm using a Luxman M-05 that has been fully restored and much more powerful output transistors have replaced the originals. This amp just grabs those big woofers and won't let go. Enjoy the big guys, they're full of music. Rick. |
