I heard lux 590 on bw803d and indeed very good.
But went for E600 instead. |

Old thread, new comment adding another name.
The first 30 watts output from the Ypsilon Phaeton are class A, and through my YG Hailey's it sounds pretty darn great: rich, transparent, smooth (with bloom in all of the right places), and deeply controlled bass. The Phaeton is a hybrid design: tubes in the pre and SS in the amp. My choices are narrowed down to the Phaeton and the DarTZeel CTH-8550. The 8550 is absolutely beautiful in the mid-range and treble but can be perceived as being a bit lighter in bass response, but I think there is plenty of bottom-end with my Hailey's. Plus, I really like the gold/red color scheme, but of course YMMV on this aspect. And, nowhere in the DarTZeel web site literature does it state if any portion of the 8550's output is class A, but it sure sounds like it! Not sure where to pull the trigger. |

Even though you seemed to have narrowed your choices, perhaps another amp to consider would be the Accuphase E650 especially since you like the gold/red look of the DarTZeel. The Accuphase distributor in Germany pairs YG with Accuphase so i am sure it would be a perfect match. |

restock -- prior to seeing your reply I went ahead and bought the Gryphon Diablo 300. Yes, I know the Diablo is listed as class A/B, it is however heavily biased toward class A (and differing comments indicate that maybe the first 10 watts or so are actually class A). Perhaps I should have demo'ed the Accuphase, but I was concerned about that amp having enough power to comfortably drive my YG Hailey loudspeakers, and the Diablo can certainly do this. I have a good return option in place, so if the Diablo does not do it for me I will definitely add the Accuphase to my list to preview. I appreciate your response.

Yes, I ended up buying the Daiblo 300, but have not been pleased with how it sounds in my system. I have replaced it with the Ypsilon Phaeton integrated, which sounds sublime with my YG Acoustics Hailey 1.2 loudspeakers.
My wife says she understands my mistake and is willing to let me take the price hit to now sell the Diablo and replace it with the Phaeton. I have promised to learn from this mistake and not repeat it. My guess is that this promise should last approx. 6 to 8 weeks or at least until I hear something I must have while at RMAF. |
