Dolby Atmos
What are your thoughts? Couple of ceiling speakers & new Atmos enabled processor/AVR going to make their way to your system?

I'd like to see actual titles confirmed for release first
But I do like the ability for the sound objects to be recalibrated for your own room - which often isn't exactly ITU/industry standard aligned which should see benefits even for 5.1/7.1 systems. Plus, I'd also like to hear how those "upward firing" speakers sound vs actual VoiceOfGod speakers. |

Question is whether this actually improves SQ, or just adds new functionality and a requirement for more amps and speakers.

I was honestly pretty impressed with the Atmos demo just before I watched Oz - also in Atmos 3D. There were a couple of scenes in Oz where this additional depth of sound effects was very pronounced. |

There's no evidence that such remapping is a feature.

I read as long as AV receivers can support HDMI 1.3 they should be able to support Atmos with only a firmware update.
Now it may be more of a matter if your processor can support additional channels beyond 7.1. Hopefully Mcintosh can come through and support the mx150/151 procs, but I'm not holding my breadth! |

As I understand it, the installation of Atmos in the cinemas takes into account the layout of the theatre and the position speakers inside. That's what allows Atmos to create that sound field.
From the Atmos white paper tho I could be reading it wrong. Quote:
