That looks great....but how to deal with the chassis of all those components? I thought they had a tail or something for that. That way, if you had to pull out or move a component, things would be easier.

Does this component
have a ground pin in
the IEC inlet?

RESULT YES:
This means that
the component can
be tested with an ohm
meter to determine if
there is continuity
between the AC
inlet ground pin and
the chassis.
ACTION:
Proceed to the
next step.

RESULT NO:
If a manufacturer
chose to use an AC
inlet that has NO
ground pin, that means
that they DO NOT
want the component
grounded to the AC
earth ground system.
ACTION:
DO NOT ground this
specific component.

Default Altaira questions

As you mentioned Pete, you need to test IEC ground terminal vs chassis post/screw or signal input/output to check for continuity (you want a zero reading or close to it …. Less than 1 acceptable).

Don’t assume just because your 501 have a 3 prong power inlet that the ground tab is actually utilized/connected internally.

I own MC611 amps and the ground pin is a road to nowhere, the connection is left open inside the chassis.

I emailed Chuck Hinton and he confirmed Mc leaves the ground tab open whenever UL certification allows it to be so without risk of electrocution in order to avoid ground noise/loop in the first place.

He didn’t say but I assume it has something to do with the autoformers and I think this is limited to quad balanced Mc amplifiers which your 501s are.

I will be interested in what you find when test your 501s for continuity.

I am confused exactly what this means for connecting Altaira to Mcintosh quad balanced amps. ….. meaning may be safe to do so but if the ground tab is left open by design, then connecting it to Altaira may not have any chance to improve SQ and would be wasting dollars for that ground wire connection.

REL has long known about needing specific connection to Mc quad balanced amps. One thing I know for sure, when I connect the REL Speakon black/neg post lead to a chassis screw (as REL states to do), there is zero hum. If that lead is removed and the positive lead is connected to amp speaker terminal, the REL will hum loud and proud so there is some kind of ground via the chassis.

I can also say that Altaira is a stunning product. I auditioned a pair of Signal Hubs in my system with all Alpha ground cables for a few weeks over the Holidays ends last year. I connected only part of my system :: C1100, D1100, Aurender N20, Aurender ACS10, Meridian 808v6, and Moon phono preamp. PHENOMENAL improvement. Still saving for purchase later this year.

I had a nice long conversation w/ Grant @ Shunyata yesterday about this very topic. Some gear that doesn’t have a ground terminal on the IEC power cable will still benefit from using Altaira as I mentioned earlier. Other components that employ a 2 prong wall wart won’t.

All components made with an electrical cord must meet UL Standards. That means they cannot have a "Hot" chassis ground. Most do in fact have a negative Chassis ground, just like a car does.

I simply let my ears decide if it is of benefit or not. In my cases, they all proved to sound better when I ran a ground cable to them.

Even my Router which only has a 2 prong plug benefited greatly from a ground cable to Altaira.

I hope that helps.

I have had a Chassis Hub for a few months now. Everything with the three prong IEC is connected with tremendous results. That left my DAC, with its floating ground two prong IEC, as the sole ungrounded component in my system. After consultation with Ivan and Ayre regarding the possibility of connecting the Altaira to my QX-5 DAC, I was assured it was safe to do so. "Try it and see" was the basic message. I connected an Alpha GC to a chassis screw and the results were immediately apparent. A further improvement in clarity, focus, and imaging was realized. Of course, now I need another cable (Ivan, you will soon have a PM) but the experiment worked in this case. Different components may not but, if the manufacturer believes it is harmless to try, give it a shot. You might be pleasantly surprised. I certainly was. My router will be next and I'm hoping for similar results. The Altaira is incredible so far and my Signal Hub has not yet arrived. In a few more weeks, it should be even more unbelievable. Big thanks to Ivan for his advice and guidance.
