International Cassette Store Day
Today is International Cassette Day. Its fifty years since the launch of the humble cassette at the Berlin Radio Show. In these economic times there is hope of a small comeback. Good chance to get more fodder for your Nakamichis et al. You might need a pencil accessory.

My Nak Dragon still gets used on a regular basis. I'll never part with it.

My first deck was a Sansui SC5100 that I picked up in Okinawa in 1980 for a paltry $150.00. Someone had put it on layaway at the PX but stopped making payments so it was on sale for the balance due. It was my lucky day. Full PX price on it was $375.00. It went into the closet when I bought the Dragon.
Ah yes my Nak Dragon… I may (sort of maybe) miss it but in no way do I miss cassettes or especially copying my LPs onto them. Man that leaves nothing but bad memories. I not only had a Dragon but I also built my first car system based around the automotive equivalent of the Dragon with A/D/S amps and speakers. My Dragon was replaceed with my first Mac, a MCD 7005. Bye, bye tapes! |

I thought this was going to be short lived. But Cassette Store Day is Sept 27th. Appears to be a niche following. Surprised with the number of US releases. Don't know many of the artists, but the ones I do are "punk" bands.

Next year they should run this in conjunction with the 1st annual 8 Track store day. May help raise attendance by 1 person.

hmm...I still use cassettes from time to time and even have some NOS Maxell XLII-90's ready to record on.
So is the cassette dead?
