Hi
I tried the 6v6 G and GT with the EML 274 and had none
electrical problems with it.
With various 5y3, however, it sounded better

Thanks for confirming. Soon after posting, I was able to get comfortable that I could use the Sophia 274b with the 6V6 (shouldn’t have second guessed myself). I have heard very good things about the EML as well so I wonder how it compares with the Sophia.

I also intend to buy another 5Y3 soon. The last one I used had some issues.

Sylvania JAN CHS 5y3wgt are very very good sounding tubes for a small price.
Phillips 5y3g and Fivre g / gt are my favorites but a lot more expensive.
Bendix 6106 supposed to be great, but expensive, haven't heard them yet.

Has anyone tried the new KR Audio KT150?
expensive, but very good reviews

Hi
to the Sophia tube I can not tell you anything,
but to the comparison of kr and eml which I both have.

both very honest, whereby the kr has minimal more pressure and the eml slight advantages in the direction of timbre and speed

depending on the music, one or the other is better.

in the long run I find the eml better

The 274B is similar enough to a 5U4 you can use it with the 6V6GT's but should use a 5Y3 or 6106 with the older 6V6 tubes. 5U4, 274B, 5Y3, 6106 should be OK with the 6V6GT's

Pulled the trigger on the highly regarded Sophia Aqua 274b Mesh plate rectifier tube. Another good tube box (see pic). Originally, I wanted to test it against the Visseaux as a replacement for the 5U4G but Dennis’ tube chart that came with the amp doesn’t pair the 274b with the 6V6, but rather with the KT88/KT77 variety, which is fine since I want to test the KT-77 soon. That said, has anyone tried either the Sophia or any other 274b with a 6v6 G or GT?

Also, looking at Dennis’ tube output/rectifier chart, it does not say 5Y3 against the 6V6–it points to the 5U4. However both Dennis and audio friends here had recommended the coke bottle shaped 5Y3G with the Fivre’s. The 5Y3 was listed against against the 6F6 in the chart in terms of pairing.

I used a 5Z3 with the Pope 6V6GT in a triode strapped Inspire amp and it sounded great. With the KT88SE I prefer a 5y3.

The Fivre is a 6v6g and only a 5y3 should be used.

I bought a Sophia 274B because it is a direct replacement for a 5U4G. I preferred a 5y3 with 6V6GT in the KT88SE. YMMV.

Default another update

Went back over to the toy shop with another friend to pick up my other speakers, and found Dennis playing with a new build, a Loctal based amp.

I believe this amp uses 7C5 output tubes and a 7N7 driver. Almost the same as a 6SN7/6V6 setup. The sound is very nice, and these tubes are cheap!

Some measurements...

and the money shot...

We also did some measurements with rectifiers, looking at the distortion curves compared across rectifiers, and the top (8 pin) rectifiers for best distortion numbers were the 5W4, the 5U4G, and the 5R4. These have the lowest 3rd and higher order distortion values...at least for this amp.

As always, YMMV...
