Never Forget This Day

I was at home getting ready for work. The odd thing was that on that morning I turned on the tv, something I never do in the morning. As a result, I watched it all live and sat in shock with the rest of the nation. Needless to say I never went in to work that day. Those images from that day are permanently etched in my brain never to be forgotten.

I was working for a court-reporting firm downtown and one of our reporters called and asked if I could come over and help carry some boxes of documents (exhibits) back to our office. I get to where he (the reporter) was and saw a TV turned on in the conference room where they were taking the deposition.

I, too, thought it was a small private plane that had a drunk pilot or some mechanical failure while I was totally out of reference as to the size of the building and the hole in it. They stopped their deposition because they were also in a very tall building downtown.

On the way back to our office he tells me "This is bad...this is really bad.." At that time I still didn't didn't grasp the scope of what was going on much less have any knowledge of the Pentagon, the plane in Pennsylvania or the aiming at the White House.

We get back to the office and all we had was a small radio that barely picked up anything to listen to. The internet was jammed solid with traffic. My boss called from home and was giving us a play by play....that's when the first building collapsed. The office manager turned to me and asked in her very solom voice..."Are we at war??" I didn't have an answer. Oddly enough, I did have in my hands an invoice to a law firm that was located in one the WTC buildings for a subpoena we had served. I looked down at it and slowly tore it in two. My boss then said on the phone "Get Outta There!", meaning she wanted all of us to get out of downtown.

About an hour later all kinds of police sirens started blarring and cop cars surrounding the Federal Building accross the street from ours. City busses were running their routes at that time to get everyone out of downtown.

I got home about 2:30 and Sheila was home from school and already had the TV on. From there is was just saturation programming for 3 straight days.

I was working in Lakeland, and we heard a plane had hit the WTC. Most of us thought, probably a small private plane or something, like the one that hit the Empire State Building in the 1940's. Then, my boss came in, who came in late because he had been out of town. He came downstairs and said he'd been watching how one 747 (he had the type of plane wrong) had hit the WTC, and while he was still watching, a second "747" hit the other tower. We all just looked at each other and then we ran upstairs to a VP's office where there was a TV, and watched as the rest of it unfolded. An unforgettable day.
