Nice luggage has always been one of my fetishes . . . and early on, I bought briefcases that were way beyond my means . . . and I have carried and used extensively, leather cases by Hartmann and Tumi for many, many years.

I still have both of the briefcases that I describe below, but they are in another location and I can't get to them now to photograph, but the pictures shown are very similar in age and wear as mine.

I actually have two of each of the leather bags shown, and currently use a smaller Tumi case in ballistic nylon, which fits my 15" MacBook Pro perfectly. The leather Tumi cases fit an older 17' Mac, and are larger and heavier than the nylon case.

I used a Hartmann similar to this one for almost 40 years and it has survived abuse and hard use and, other than the belting leather taking on an aged patina, it is "good as new"

And, when Laptops came along and I felt I needed a briefcase with a shoulder strap, I got a Tumi leather case similar to this one. The Tumi also held up to daily use and travel with few scars.

Carried that identical Hartmann for 30+ years. I'll have to see if it is still in the basement storage. Hartmann repaired it after my house was broken into in Princeton in the early 80s (initally typed 90s, but then I looked in the mirror and recognized my error ) and I had left it locked (zero items of value inside). Broke all the wood in the frame around the locks and Hartmann made it as good as new. Also have what I call a 'floppy top' full leather Orvis, which I don't really care for. May turn it into one of my range bags for shooting now that I think of it. It would carry a bunch of cleaning materials.

Tom Bihn laptop bags, briefcases, backpacks, etc. it's not leather, but it's the best designed, built, best materials I can imagine. Unbelievably good stuff for relatively modest prices - every bag will basically last a lifetime. Tombihn.com (and American owned and made). It's right next to my better audio stuff and my better fishing reels in the hierarchy.

I collect briefcases somewhat and I have been curious about these. Look forward to your next review.
