Preparing ourselves for a Beethoven evening with the London Philharmonic this Friday.

They will play the 3rd piano concerto.
This Blu-ray gives a good taste of it. I'd rate it 4 1/2 stars.

And then, after the pause, they will perform the 7th.

This box of 3 discs gets 5 stars from me!

Schubert - Symphonies Nos 8 & 9
Swedish Chamber Orchestra, Thomas Dausgaard

When I first heard this disc, I didn't like the interpretation of the 'Unfinished'. Much too fast.
I thought the 'Great' was alright.
But I've come to appreciate the approach of Dausgaard.
Especially for the 9th (or 8th, as some say), it works well.
The 8th (7th) still doesn't convey the same emotions as the slower versions do.
The sound is impeccable and as this is a smallish orchestra, you can hear every section really well.

Looking at the title, you could still wonder whether this album is full of sad music.
But from the first notes, you hear the sparkle, the pure joy that Amandine Beyer and her musicians convey in such a wonderful way.
If classical music can rock, this one certainly does!
I got this disc a couple of weeks ago and I've been enjoying it thoroughly. The recorded sound is very fine and the chamber performances are vigorous.

Thanks for the reco, Bart.

Have I listed this before? Probably, but this is a real gem:

Beethoven - Bagatelles
John O'Conor, piano
Telarc 1996

Beautifully formed little pieces of music, all under 5 minutes, the shortest only 14 seconds. Played by O'Conor with his usually delicate touch, and a good recording to boot. One of my favorite piano recordings.

Arvo Pärt - Berliner Messe
Elora Festival Singers and Orchestra, Noel Edison
Jurgen Petrenko, organ

Simplicity, geniality, musicality and the warmth of low organ notes that make the house rattle!

I saw Karina Gauvin perform Ravel live a couple of years ago. She is a wonderful soprano, with a bit of a darkish tone.

We are staying with:

Arvo Pärt - Da Pacem
Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, Paul Hillier
Christopher Bowers-Broadbent, organ

Absolutely one of the best living composers.
