I used a piece of smoked glass on top of a subwoofer many years ago. It looked great on the walnut speaker. I got it from a local glass (automotive and buildings) shop and it did not cost too much. I know it was tempered and the edges were polished. I think they had to order it since it is tempered glass and had to be cut before being tempered.

Anyway, I recommend tempered glass. You can easily get a price from one or two local shops. Good luck.
