Aquafina leaves zero residue. I regularly pour a bottle into a large serving dish for pet bird bath. Normal tap water would leave a lot of deposits at the edge of the dish every time. (I leave it out for a few days and the water evaporates away, particularly in Winter) Aquafina leaves NOTHING behind. So I promise you could let the Aquafina evaporate IN YOUR RECORDS and no problem. let alone drying them off.
SO my 100%recommendation for Aquafina as a residue free water source.

Agree that no pre-heating of water is necessary (using an Audio Desk). Any reason you guys using Aquafina don’t just use distilled water? It’s a lot cheaper at the grocery store, doesn’t leave any residue, and it’s what most manufacturers recommend.

+1

As clean as Aquafina is, it’s still not as pure as distilled water.

I use my own made RODI water, which is also used for my aquariums.

(and cigar humidors)

Default Question about Ultrasonic RCM

Good call using RODI.

The “DI” (deionized) part of “RODI” is an additional stage that removes most of the remaining ions left in the water after the reverse osmosis stage. If you’ve already got RODI for your fish tanks, it’s a great choice for record cleaning machines.

Since you have a DIY effort and not a store bought desktop RCM which typically do not have heaters, the answer is: Yes, heat the water in your tank.

The effectivness of most cleaning solutions is increased with higher temperature. Also, as the temperature goes up, the scrubbing action of the vacuum bubbles is more evenly distributed across the record surface.

Almost all industrial USC machies use heated water for those reasons. The general guideline for USC is to apply heat at 65% of the boiling point of the solution. While most solution is not water only, I'll use water as an example. It has a boiling point of 100° C so that would leave us at 65° C or 149° F.

As vinyl record cleaners we are constrained somewhat by what we're cleaning. There is a lot of discussion about optimal solution temperature for vinyl. I believe that 65° C is too high for vinyl. I recommend staying under 100° F, say around 95° F or about 35° C. (I'm guessing your chinese tank is calibrated in centrigrade.)

As noted, sonic energy (cavitation) poured into a tank will raise the temperature of the solution over time. This correlates to the length of the cleaning cycle. Over a 10-20 minute cycle I observe solution temp increasing by may 5-degrees.

My suggestion is to experiment and see what works for you. Also recommended is to get a TDS meter which let's you measure total disolved solids in your tank solution and temperature.

What solution are you using? I'm using ~1.3 cups of IPA (isopropyl alcohol) + .9 tablespoons of Ilfotol in 12.75 liters of distilled water.

I also have a DIY setup and published several articles on the subject. Take a look at this thread diy rcm here at AA which has links to the articles.

As you note, de-ionized water (DI) is water with most of its ions removed; it has almost all inorganic contaminants removed though not all organic chemicals (which s/b the job of the RO filter.) When sitting around it will attack any material it contacts to get those ions back - it trys to leach ionized minerals from its surrounding material. That's why storing it can be problematic.

If you want to use DI water in a USC, you want a tank suited for it, which would be glass or stainless steel. There are no glass usc tanks that I know of. Better USC stainless steel tanks should have smooth, clean passivated welds, preferably made with 316 Stainless steel. Something to consider when choosing a tank - formed (not welded) rounded corners at the bottom. It's funny where this hobby can take us.
