Let's see I've owned MCS, Denon, Yamaha, NAD, McIntosh and Moon for receivers and amps.
So I'll state of the brands I've had serious listening time: 1. Audio Research - I like the sound; however, my budget and fear of tubes leaves me as an admirer. 2. Moon wonderful gear and often excellent value for money. 3. McIntosh - I replaced my McIntosh gear with Moon because I think its an upgrade AND McIntosh was excellent and rekindled my music enjoyment. Resale value is a great reminder on how good music sounds on McIntosh. Is there a McIntosh sound sure but if you are going to have a 'sound' its not a bad one to have!

1. Convergent Audio Technology -CAT (few peers that I've heard...a league of their own)
2. Dynaco - Classic poor man's high end... great to modify for next level performance 3. VTA - Mods/amps based on Dynaco designs with modern circuits/parts (sleepers) 4. B&K - Great sounding value amps from the mid 80s to the early 2000s 5. Hafler - Another affordable classic that's great for mods

McIntosh tube. Cary tube. Conrad Johnson tube. Sony VFET solid state. Yamaha VFET solid state.
