After a bit of a "break" from audio (home improvement projects).

I'm back! I plan to do a final assessment over the coming few weeks.

My DAC finalists are the following:

-Aries Cerat Kassandra MK2
-Playback Designs Dream DAC (MPD-8)
-Mola Mola Tambaqui

I just received my "new to me" Antipodes K50 streamer, so I plan to feed all three of these finalists the very best.

I've been burning in the MPD-8 for 3 weeks straight...(528 hours on the unit now). I've been playing music through my Aurender N10 non-stop into the Playback DAC.

When the Playback arrived into the arena, we listened a bit to the Mola Mola, and it is a top DAC for sure. It is a fantastic DAC, that eliminates the digital sound, definitely at home with the best components.

Then we listened to the Playback. Out the box, you can just tell it is "special". Me and my friend both said, the Mola Mola is going to get sold. Nothing wrong with it at all, its a fantastic "finalist" for sure. Now with over 500 hours the Playback simply blows my mind.

It is hard to describe, but symbols just sound real. It mops the floor with pretty much every DAC I've ever heard (excepting the AC Kassandra).

The Playback delivers a sound that I could live with and never look back. It is amazing! The presentation of music is very rich, real, and it gives you all the details but you find yourself tapping your toes and not skipping songs.

I am liking it so much (even with my "modest" Aurender N10) that I don't even want to change a thing. I have a killer Antipodes k50 that has sat unplugged for over a week, which I fully expect will take things up another level, and I have limited desire to even hook it up. The Playback is that good.

I'm going to let it season for a bit, and eventually let the goliaths fight it out.

I feel very fortunate to be able to have such fantastic choices in these 3 DACs... It's the best my system has ever sounded.

More to come!

FWIW, the Mola-Mola is the best performing DAC ever tested at Audio Science Review. ASR is not everyone's favorite site, but they do present objective data.

To be objective, it's not enough to simply take measurements. In ASR's case, they often don't even bother to listen to the components they measure. I don't know why they're afraid to listen, but for measurements to really have value, they should be correlated to what we hear. Otherwise, what's the assurance that the measurements are meaningful or were properly conducted? Faith? That's not objective.

I’ve gotten sidetracked with how good my secondary system sounds.

I plan to spend a fair bit of time with the Mola vs Aries vs Playback this week and can report back.

I'll be interested to see the results. The Playback is more than twice the price of the Mola in Oz.The Aries is even more!

I haven't posted in awhile. I read here much more than post.

There was a thread started on here many years ago, asking to post your biggest regrets in Audio. I posted it was me selling the MDA1000. I got caught in the "latest" gadgetry and USB...this and that....

The MDA sound was so far from digital... opposite of "clinical". I have contemplated many times to get it back. However, I believe some time ago I emailed McIntosh about getting parts for it if it ever failed. I didn't get the rosy response I wanted.

I've had my share of McIntosh over 18 years. The MDA1000 impressed me the most. I really wish they would re-release this gem again with very few changes of the design.

Pete.....are you familiar with what McIntosh can do if the unit malfunctions? Maybe I'm just too paranoid and worried I'd be stuck with a brick.

I went through a couple of Brystons and an NAD Masters series DAC. The Masters series was very detailed. It was great for showing off, but when I would sit back by myself to enjoy.....I didn't fall in love with the music.

The two Brystons either didn't mate well with my speakers or something....I never did like those.

I have the Yggy with the latest upgrades I believe. The downside of this DAC is that it HAS to stay on all the times and the USB source has to be feeding into it at all times. I have found a way for my PC to feed it a signal off the hard drive at all times while the stereo is off. When I turn the system on....it sounds great. To turn this unit on after being cold....really sounds poor. It would lose to many shootouts unless was warmed up for several days. Just my opinion.....
