Thanks for a really good read Tony.

I never listened to any of the Linn Climax products but it seems like they speak for themselves, first of all it seems like there's no way to improve on these products sonically.

The other thing is, once you have seen them, you just gotta have them, the design and visual look of the klimax DSM is beyound great. I would really like to go to the point where I get the system and from then on I just forget about any changes or upgrades and only enjoy the music.

Your system would be the way to go in that sense

Incredibly great system Tony

Did you sense any improvements as the system got more time loosening up?

-Cheers Harald

Hi Haraldo, welcome to AA. The only change after breakin was the little bit of edginess and upper midrange glare I initially heard disappeared, and the sound became just a bit fuller through the midrange. It's sounding very, very good at the moment.

Is this DAC/Streamer still relevant today? I had a friend recommend I check one out - since I tend to like pre-owned gear for the savings.

The one referenced in this thread is the Klimax DSM/2, which is now two versions old, but is still a very good box. I still have this one in a headphone system. The successor model is the DSM/3 with Katalyst DAC architecture, which is still an awesome streaming DAC and what I currently use in my main system. Through its own app it can stream Tidal, Qobuz and Spotify, it’s Roon-tested, and can handle DSD 128. It’s only been surpassed by the new Klimax Organik in the past year.

Cool.

Any idea how it stacks up against the dCS Rossini-

I’m intrigued about the Space Optimization feature of Linn source products. Seems like an alternative to room correction to tweak the sound.

I prefer a warmer full sound over a more analytical sound.

The Space Optimization works really well. It's a nice feature.

The Linn is very, very neutral. I would not characterize it as neither "warm" nor "analytical". Neutral does not mean "analytical"; neutral is neutral. Think of a true neutral gray area in a digital photograph: the gray is comprised of R/G/B values of 128/128/128, respectively.

Space Optimization can help tame room nodes and make speaker positioning a little more flexible.

I think the Klimax Katalyst is competitive with the Rossini. I have the Klimax and have heard the Rossini at the same dealer where I got the Linn, although not with the external clock. My overall impression was that the Rossini was a little more clinical sounding and the Linn a bit more natural. I don’t know what the clock might add to the Rossini.

If I were in the market today, the Rossini would certainly be on my list. I understand the new Linn Organik sounds awesome, but I can’t get past all the features and bling that would be wasted on me.
