The measurements do tend to indicate that the driver integration is slightly compromised in the absence of the turbine head.

Overall though, the measurements show a slight improvement over the previous model.

I was hoping to see a Stereophile review of the 801 or 802D4, and hope that's in their plans for 2022.

Do we have any measurements of the 802d4 yet?

Measurements aside I have spent a hour or so listening to the 805D4, 804D4 and a couple of hours with the 801D4. I think all of them are a significant step forward from the D3's.

I agree with this. You have to read that magazine with a grain of salt - rarely do they ever come out and say something is bad. Usually you have to fish it out of the review, which the OP did. I have noticed that when John Atkinson he says "This is a loudspeaker you have to audition" - that is about as negative as he will go. And I don't think he is being negative, but he is saying to go listen to it and see if you like it.

That being said, I think JA writes amazing reviews and I love his measurements and the way he overlays the graphs with other speakers. My goal is to go to Axpona in 2022 and listen to some of the benchmarks he uses, and maybe I can get some reference points for his auditions.

I know the 800s aren’t neutral but they just have a great coloration with the music I listen to.

What kinds of music do you listen to primarily?

The benefit of a JA review is that his measurement methodology has not changed over the years and so you can figure out if you are personally going to like a speaker based on his measurements and what you have heard from other speakers he has reviewed. His comments always help me understand what he thinks by reading between the lines.
