KT170's in a 6FLV
Dennis just received his KT170's so he put them in his 6FLV.
Lots of lower midrange and upper bass weight and lots of air on the top registers. [IMG][/IMG] |

If that's the case then you can use 6550's in it with 5Y3, 5U4, and 5AR4 rectifiers and their equivalents. 6550's can handle the highest voltage you can get from that power transformer. Which amp do you have? |

You know, I've used 6550's in my KT-88 strapped as a Triode SEP, along with the cited preamp, and I was not convinced. It did change the overall sound flavor but not as an improvement. Good KT-88's with the right rectifier (be it 5Z4 or the 284 mesh plate, depending on the tracklisting) can be just the thing in this setup. In my amp KT-88's have spark, something that is not that common in tubes, and at the same time present a very balanced sound over the essential frequency range. Midrange in general (female vocals, for example, or cellos, violas, etc.) sound quite natural and with more or less the right timbre depending on the recording quality. I start to miss the KT-88's when I swich to 6550's, which make for a nice change of pace but not the best ouput tube in my setup. At least, that is my recollection of it. Need to listen to them once again and compare ... Nice! No doubt YMMV, this is just my personal opinion on them.

As an Altec collector, I would say no, but then again how much does a 604-8G cost, or one of the new GPA duplexes for than matter?

What rectifier tube will you need to use if you use KT-170 and what benefits do you get using these tubes.

Unless I hear more input, I may shy away from the idea of the Lii's and continue where I took a shot in the dark. Thanks again. |

Hey bwilson61, you can use any of the rectifiers that I mentioned in my earlier post.
But I would start with a 5AR4 or an equivalent to put the most voltage on the plates. After that I would roll different rectifiers to see how they affected the sound. I have not heard them personally but Dennis has and he says the lower midrange and upper bass weight are improved and there is lots of air on the top registers when he put them in his 6FLV. |
