I'm discovering much more music than ever. I am listening to much more music than ever...

Don't have to store and obsessively clean records. Not to mention I was spending upwards of $50 per new record and now I have access to pretty much EVERYTHING out there for less than one vinyl record a month. The days of storing 1000's of CDs and 800+ records I had is over. To each their own though and I understand those that are still into it.

Default New TT?

Hello to you all,

I currently use a Rega P6 with the Ania cartridge, connected in the MC input of my McIntosh C52. The C52 preamp is feeding an MC462 power amp, connected to a pair of Wilson Audio Sabrina.

I am quite new in the TT world, two years since I bought my TT and start collecting vinyls. I really enjoy the medium and the mastering done for it.

I believe I have a good hearing, but for your information, I can't hear a difference between a Spotify (320kbps) and Tidal Lossless. I think that the difference will lie in a different mastering or a signal manipulation, if a difference is noticeable. But I can definitely hear a difference between the C52 DAC and the RME ADI-2 DAC, streaming the same source (of course), and prefer the RME. And I am not the type of guy upgrading my ethernet cable to have better sound...

I really enjoy the RP6, but I am wondering what would be the difference between it and the HW-40 or the VPI Prime.

I recently started looking at Oracle Delphi. The factory is an hour drive from home, but then I was thinking about the look of it and how I would probably prefer something more sober like the SME Model 12, the VPI Prime or the Rega P10.

The HW-40 seems fun to operate. The power supply is integrated, there is not belt and maintenance seems easier on a direct-drive TT.

Is it day and night between TT, is it more a question of taste ? Will I have to have a separate Phono preamp or the C52 built-in is good enough for a higher-end TT?

Do you have some advice ? Thought ?

Will I get something more from another TT than the RP6, knowing my audio gear?

Thank you !

Of course personal preference is always a factor for any piece of audio gear.

The primary job of a turntable is two-fold. Spin the record at 33-1/3 rpm and do so quietly. The more stable the rotation at 33-1/3 and the quieter the 'table the clearer the sound. Improved timing means less signal smearing which means improvements in sonic characteristics related to time, such soundstage, tonality, articulation, etc. As you'd expect, the better the design, materials and implementation, the better the 'table. There can be significant sonic differences between different 'tables.

So yes, since you mentioned direct drive, I would expect a Technics SL-1000R, SP10R or Grand Prix Audio Parabolica or VPI HW-40 to sound better than a Rega P6 and not by a small amount. The phonostage brings the largest and perhaps most significant gain increase of the tiny signal coming off the cartridge. I'm not familiar with the CS52 preamp but there are quite a few excellent phonostages available as separates, often on the used market.

Mikeyb - terrific looking rig and bet it sounds at least as good as it looks.
Are those Stillpoints under the corners?

Thanks, I really like the looks and how it sounds.

I've no idea what feet those are, they came with the plinth, but they were chosen by the person who made the plinth and he would have used them after lots of testing to find the best match isolation wise. I'll ask him what they are.
