Default Please Check Your Twinstore - 2TB

For those who share the same 2TBx2TB Twinstore, please check to ensure the HDD you have are NOT the "Green" type! They will fail in due time. Mine did, just barely after 3 months of use.

Symptoms:

1. Playback becomes awkward to the point, it stalls every now and then and can never complete a full minute of music.

2. Backup usually takes a minute or less per "CD" file now seems to take hours.

3. Loading/Populating of Sooloos C15 screen seems to stall and take hours.

All seems to be like one having a "Network" issue where in fact, its the drive slowly failing.

HDD To use:

1. Hitachi HDD

2. WD, Seagate & others MUST be of the "NON-Green" type (as HDD must always be "on")

3. If one is rich enough, go for the ENTERPRISE quality ones. Tested to be EXTREMELY reliable BUT costly.

4. ALWAYS DO A BACKUP of what you have in the Twinstore, even though its suppose to doing it on its own.

I learn it the painful way as am still (dealer helping) to recover/backup from the "damaged HDD" the precious 450 CD files on it. Its been like 4 days and only 110 are just being backup!

Cheers!

Hey Jerry, sorry to hear that man! I hope you have luck recovering the rest of your library. Looking back, how long ago did your symptoms start?

Yup, I am keeping my fingers crossed that in 2 weeks time, I shall have my entire 450CD library on the failing 2TB WD HDD recovered.

I started to experience the problem like 5 days after Chinese New Year, that is like about 3 months after I had the Twinstore. For 2 weeks, I was told that the Meridian system is working as if the HDD died, one would not even be able to see nor listen to the music on it.

So, I went berserk and changed EVERY single network component to narrow down the cause of the slowness (Modem, Gagabit Router/Switcher, Power Over Internet Plugs) still ..... The truth came when dealer had no choice but tobring HIS own network gears to test and bingo, its the Twinstore that is failing. What is even more surprising BOTH HDD fail ..... very slowly.

Oh well, I just hope for the best!

Please remember todo a FULL backup ... I am doing it now. Sigh ... a little too late BUT still hoping for the best!

Hi Jerry,

so sorry to hear those troubles. I hope you'll recover everything.
You see, after my troubles with the Olive 6, that is the main reason why I did not follow the route of a "high end " server : I was not ready for paying so much for a computer finally, of course with a superb interface in the case of the Sooloos. Plus I found a sound as good, for regular cds at least, as what I had with my separate drive, with the Squeezebox Touch / ipad / a Nas / ripping with db poweramp in flac, ultra secure mode.
I can feel your pain cause I imported about 200 cds, and that's already a lot of time.
When it will be over, you will receive my small "gift" !

Sorry to hear about that. All hard drive will fail, it's about when it will not if it will. Too bad SSD is still very expensive.

Jerry, if the twinstore is off can we just pull out the hdd to look or is there some special method, screws etc etc.

I am almost at the end of my ripping process with 2736 cds ripped and will start my back up soon but want to check to make sure anyway.

thanks

Howie, When I upgraded/replaced my 1TB drives w/ 2TB drives, it was as simple as opening the drivebay release and pulling the drives straight out. There are no other connections to concern yourself with. Just pay attention to the orientation when you return them. I popped mine out this morning to eyeball the model numbers. It's a simple process that takes just seconds once the Twinstore is powered down.

You don't have to wait to backup your library (actually I wouldn't wait!). The backups are incremental so you can be assured that what you've done so far is safe (w/o any completion risk).

I have never had a problem with any drive in any computer I have ever owned. (Just set myself up I know). With both of your drives going at once I would bet it was a power delivery issue. I have both servers on units with battery back-up power that automatically keeps AC within a given range or it switches over to battery power. If you don't have something like a APC S-15 or Pure Power 2000 I suggest you add one. Those thunderstorms in Singapore can be brutal.
