Jeff are you planning on having the Sooloos rebuild the RAID set on the fly? I think there's greater risk in that approach than backing up to a NAS and restoring to the newly populated drives.

I have never had a problem with any drive in any computer I have ever owned. (Just set myself up I know). With both of your drives going at once I would bet it was a power delivery issue. I have both servers on units with battery back-up power that automatically keeps AC within a given range or it switches over to battery power. If you don't have something like a APC S-15 or Pure Power 2000 I suggest you add one. Those thunderstorms in Singapore can be brutal.

Hi Jim,

For HDD, its either they "died" and cannot be used. In this case, BOTH the HDD is still "alive", just that they performed ever so slowly in retrieving of information. Its nothing to do with power. This is also the FIRST time I experienced this strange phenomena.

Its been confirmed that the "GREEN" issue is the cause of this. Hitachi drives are NON Green and hence are not affected. So does Enterprise ones. Somehow, the "energy saving" is not working well with the Twinstore.

As to Jeff's question of which is primary and which is secondary, I think the best is to swapped out BOTH drives to Enterprise ones. Even so, as in all computer cases, its best to have a second (or even a third) backup. I am going to do this, starting using the QNAP I have (for those who had not bough a backup gear, DROBO is way much easier and better! I did not do it as back then, someone told me QNAP is better and I chose that decision. Wrong). And of course, an INDEPENDENT EXTERNAL HDD apart from the QNAP to save the information and keep it in my drawer. HDD's are cheap and its best to be sure all information are always available when the day comes when a need to restore happen. I learn it the hard way and now, to be sure, I am making sure!

Oh, SSD fails too! And its even worse as there is no way to save or get anything once that happen. So, apart from cost, SSD is also extremely unreliable. The only thing its good at is just "speed".

It does have my friend:

1. Chore (cleaning, keeping it off molds).
2. Storage (environment & space).
3. "Accidents" (scratches, mishandling ... ouch).

My dear wife just gave me a lecture about spending money ... got an earful. Bottom line is whatever I indulge in, its always some form of problem. Can I have a hobby that is free of hassle?

I did some research on this before picking my 2tb drives for my Twinstore. I went with the Western Digital Enterprise drives WD2003FYYS. As far as I can tell these have no "green" power saving features in them. Not exactly a long term study but they have given me no troubles in the 9 months I've had them.

The original drives that came in my Twinstore were Hitachi HDS721010CLA332 drives, I'm a bit surprised to find these are just desktop class drives and not enterprise drives. Hitachi does have enterprise drives, they call them Ultrastar drives, I guess Meridian decided not to use them.

To give you an idea of the price difference in drives: The Hitachi 2tb desktop class drive is the HDS722020ALA330 drive, Amazon has them for $123 each. The Western Digital Enterprise 2tb drive WD2003FYYS, Amazon has them for $269 each.

Dealer told me they have installed the Hitachi ones.

I opened up my twinstore and the dealer installed SEAGATE CONSTELLATION EC drives.

Are these enterprise drives??
