Default Boulder 866 and YG speakers
Hi there
have any of you heard the 866 with YG speakers (which I have)?
also is the 866 quite warm/rich sounding in the midrange compared to other solid state amps.

If the 866 and the Nagra Classic Integrated were the same price, I would buy the Boulder. But that’s me, my tastes, etc. the Nagra may be ever so slightly sweeter, the boulder a bit more dynamic. I find the soundstage and dimensionality of the Boulder more to my liking. Added to the equation thought that the Boulder has a top notch streamer, dac and more modern user interface. I just love the Nagra aesthetic though...like a classic Rolex sportswatch. Every cell phone keeps better time but there’s something about a Daytona you know?

I will refrain though from calling the Boulder warm or rich. Its on the warm side of dead neutral but if you are looking for a solid state amp with set tube qualities, stop looking or get the Pass/Luxman/Accuphase/Sugden. The Boulder is a significant achievement, a serious instrument and yet it is smooth and non fatiguing. Go listen. Listen for a while, listen to familiar music on familiar ancillaries. Its really, really a fine amplifier.

from what I have read its meant to be relatively warm? an improvement on the 865?
with male vocals like Johnny Cash can you feel the weight

I dont know your ancillary gear but if you can't feel the weight of Johnny Cash's voice when played through the Boulder, it won't be the fault of the 866 I assure you.

for any 866 owners, how hot does it get? can it be placed fairly close to my speakers on one side and tv on another with all the heat dissipating

Do any of you have experience with the D'agostino Progression Integrated? I've bought Wilson Sabrina speakers and am looking for an integrated to go with it. Unfortunately there are no Boulder dealers where i live, but i'm very interested in the 866 integrated. I can listen to the D'agostino though at my dealer, but it's 1.5 times the price of the Boulder.

I have not heard the Progression integrated but have heard the Progression amps quite a lot. I have owned Boulder for a long time (1008, 1110, 3060) and heard the 866 briefly last January. I like the Boulder sound much more than the DAG sound so I would get the 866. IMO Boulder is better built, too.
