Focal 1038BE w/ McIntosh - 4 or 8 ohm
Hello,
I have the 1038BE’s and am powering them with McIntosh MC601 600w mono blocks. I know the nominal impedance is 8ohm, but I also see they dip down to around 3 ohm. I am just wondering what other folks are doing - Do you prefer the 4 or 8 ohm taps for these with your Mc amps? |

I have Sopra2’s paired up with a McIntosh MC462, drive them off of the 4ohm tap. No issues at all. I just started to stream from Tidal with a Lumin U1 and a McIntosh C47 preamp. The DAC in the C47 is seldom mentioned but let me tell you that it pairs up nicely with the Lumin. Try it you’ll like it. Would post pix but don’t know how.

Just try both taps and stick with the one that YOU think sounds best. Either one is safe for the amp and speakers.

Quite a while ago I spoke to a Focal Rep and he recommended running the Sopra No 2’s using the 8 ohm taps off my McIntosh MC 452 amp. To my ears sounds better to me. I am using C52 and Aurender N10 streaming Qobuz which I recently switched to from Tidal. I also think Qobuz sounds better.

I did some experimenting. For me in my setup, I found the 8 Ohm taps to sound best.
