Default Beethoven: Piano Trios Nos. 3 & 7

Ok. This is better...

Beethoven:
Piano Trio No. 3 in C minor, Op. 1 No. 3
Piano Trio No. 7 in B flat Major, Op. 97 'Archduke'
Kempf Trio

Good chamber music to wind down the day and the workweek. The BIS recording is crystal clear and light years ahead of the opaque Savall Brandenburg above.

The musical performance by Savall and his Le Concert des Nations sounds fine, but this set is marred by poor sound. Unfortunately I cannot recommend it particularly when there are splendid sets available from the Dunedin Consort and Concerto Italiano.
It's an old recording reprocessed.

Yeah. They messed up the remastering.

However, the Alia Vox label has successfully remastered other old recordings like the Handel - Water Music, Music for the Royal Fireworks which was recorded in 1993. Not sure what happened with the Bach.

This is a great recording and worthy of hearing more than the 200+ times that I've listened to it since I got it in 1977.

Listening to . . . . Antonín Dvořák - Symphonic Poems

Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra - Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Conductor

These beautiful pieces of music have not appeared often in concerts I've attended - make that have never appeared, but maybe they should have . . . They are excellent and enjoyable to listen to. Played very well here by Harnoncourt and the Concertgebouw and well recorded. Good sound.

This is a real, as yet, mostly undiscovered treasure.

A two disc set by Warner Classics, released in 2006.

Listening to . . . . Franz Schubert - Symphony No. 9 in C "The Great"

Royal Flemish Philharmonic Orchestra - Philippe Herreweghe, Conductor

The "great" symphony, played by a great orchestra with a great conductor. Darn this SACD sounds good - except for the fact that I played the Ivan Fischer - Channel Classics recording of this music a couple of days ago and I like it better for its majesty and scale.

If you have nothing to compare this too, however, there is much to like here - small orchestra with exquisite tonality - very real "you are there" sound and sound staging.

The BBC Music Magazine says: “This is a performance of the wide-open spaces: fresh, invigorating air; rhythms with a spring in their step; impressive vistas...[Herreweghe] understands that driving the Finale at breakneck speed is not the best way to generate momentum, and he holds the attention despite his observing all the repeats...The sound is wonderful: atmospheric but always clear and beautifully balanced.”

Back from a seminar and a good concert, and playing this marvelous CD, signed by the maestro himself:

We just attended a concert, offered us for free, with a meet and greet afterwards, because we are member of the 'Concertgebouw Brugge Friends'.

It was a classical program, with a Haydn Symphony (always 'decent'), C.P.E. Bach's Oboe Concerto (a gorgeous discovery), and Mozart's 12th piano concerto (what a genius he was!), played on a pianoforte by the conductor himself. Relaxing, nice, a prefect ending of a busy week.

We are blessed to have a top orchestra so close, in a medieval city that should be visited by every world citizen!

Julian, joining you with this indeed fantastic conductor - my wife and I were lucky enough to see him live quite a few times already - but in a different genre:

Roland de Lassus - Cantiones Sacrae - Sex Vocum
Collegium Vocale Gent, conducted by Philippe Herreweghe

You can't find better polyphonic music than this I think...

In the mood for some more dynamic music . . . .

Listening to . . . Beethoven - Symphony No. 9 - From the Pentatone Box Set

Luidwig Van Beethoven - The Nine Symphonies

Gewandhausorchester Leipzig - Kurt Masur, Conductor

Released on 5 SACDs - Remastered from the original master tapes of Philips Quadro releases in the mid 1970's

Probably not the ultimate Beethoven Symphony set . . . but the recording is excellent . . . the sound very, very good. I've heard the word "stodgy" used in regards to this set, but sometimes stodgy is good. More modern conductors perform this music too fast, and recording engineers tend to put the orchestra in your lap . . .

This recording positions the orchestra spread out in front of you . . . like you are seated in the middle of the 5th row . . very realistic, very good sound staging and imaging. Excellent capture of hall ambience. Sometimes this orchestra sounds eerily real.

Pentagon does it right - excellent re-master - wish I had surround sound for this one. But, it is excellent in stereo.

Default Chopin: Preludes

In the meantime I'm enjoying...

Chopin:
Preludes (24), Op. 28
Prelude Op. 45 in C sharp minor (No. 25)
Prelude Op. posth. in A flat major (No. 26)
Piano Sonata No. 2 in B flat minor, Op. 35 'Marche funèbre'
Martha Argerich (piano)

Brilliant playing by my Argentine compatriot, Martha Argerich. According to the guide I have, her changes of mood in the 24 Preludes make her "performance scintillating unpredictable." I can see what they mean.

The recorded sound is excellent. A good disc.
