Default Senns

I could not decide between HD600 and HD650.. then heard the HD660s and IMHO it has the best parts of the 600/650.

Default Sennheiser

Just out of curiosity...What are your favorite Sennheiser wired cans?

The Senn brand has been recommended both here and by word of mouth the most, so I'm definitely leaning that way...and, if the price is too high this time around, I'll always know what to save for, so please feel free to recommend your favorites. It's always nice to learn new things.

At days end what were recommending is the entry point for genuine hi fi headphones. This means you get an accurate timbre more or less to the music, the Bass Mids and High notes don't splurge in to each other,so if you were say going to get bassy 'phones you would still hear the mids and high notes, and it would be quality bass, not just heaps of quantity drowning out everything else to give sound body. You also get a sense of where the singer and instrumentalists are physically positioned in the sound space of the song, and a cohesion in this,it's not a confused jumble of sounds, which is also important in complex orchestral music, and your getting correct atmospheres; Bach organ music you will hear the guy pressing the foot pedals of the organ, which is called detail retrieval. So in a Steppenwolf song I heard a door slam and I thought someone was breaking in to my flat. This is called Dynamics. So the 560s will begin to give you these things. Further up the pay scale these things get better and better, until eventually the music is coming live from your front room.

As for Senn, yes the 660's will give a finer sound than the 560s. About 12 years ago they came out with the HD 800 which had an un rivaled sound stage at the time and by and large now but it had a treble spike which they tempered with the 800s. They also have a kind of closed back version called the 820. The big news right now is their new IEM, the ie 900, which is getting some rave reviews. It's also £1000 but may serve as an end game.

Bill, of all the Senns I heard, I can comfortably recommend the Orpheus 2.
You'll need to save a bit but it's really worth it.

This is what my buddy Jacques wrote the day we heard it:

The Award for “No Brainer If You Can Afford It” goes to the Sennheiser HE1 aka The Orpheus 2.0. It was sharing the stage with a HD800, a HD800S and HD660S (I think), all playing the same track. As I’m in the market for new cans, this was a great opportunity to compare. The 800S is absolutely more my cup of tea than the 800, but the HE1 rules them all. Yes, believe what you read about this marvel, this is not a headphone system, this a “direct brain pleasure centre stimulation dopamine release device”. I’m pretty sure there is some subliminal “euphonics” tube magic going on, but who cares, the experience is overwhelming, intoxicating and addictive. It was fun to see the anticipating looks on the faces of the Sennheiser people, brimming with pride (and rightly so), whenever someone donned the HE1 headset, as they knew what would happen next. And yes, you can add a second headphone to the amp for a measly 25.000 Euro so you can share the magic with a second person. Probably one of the more intense things you can do with your significant other…with your clothes on. Bravo Sennheiser!

My impressions:

Smile Love to learn

I may be getting long in the tooth, but I still love to learn. We will never be able to afford the Sennheiser HE1s, but I asked for the best from Senn and , obviously, that's what I got. Honestly, I never knew that a set of cans could be taken so seriously.

Bill, don't get the impression I can afford the HE1!
But I do love Sennheiser.
When I turned 40, my wife bought me a pair of cans.
She gifted the most expensive Senns then available: the HD650s.
I still use them with utmost pleasure!
