I'm jealous. No matter how hard I try in my 16x26x10 room, I cannot make my power guard lights come on. They should not be looked at as "warning lights" but as indicators that your "protection" system is working properly. Crank it up and enjoy the excitement.

Just the peaks mind you, not non-stop. The sound is spectacular so I don't have any audio complaints of any kind. I don't hear any chirps, clips...nothing.

Just wondering.

I guess I figured the were doing their job.
Maybe your ears...
Out of curiosity, what is the decibel level you are listening at when you are bumping the PG lights like a turn signal.

85 dB and higher - prolonged exposure will result in hearing loss
90 dBA - no more than 8 hours per day (examples - lawn mower, truck traffic, hair dryer)
95 dBA - no more than 4 hours per day
100 dBA - no more than 2 hours per day (example - chain saw)
105 dBA - no more than 1 hour per day
110 dBA - no more than ½ hour per day
115 dBA - no more than ¼ hour per day (preferably less)
140 dBA - NO EXPOSURE TO IMPACT OR IMPULSE NOISE ABOVE THIS LEVEL (examples - gunshot blast, jet plane at takeoff)

I am breaking those rules; 105-110 for about an hour.

At the beginning of the thread. I have the LS-6s now, I expect the bigger LS-9s in about a month.

PS. I do more than an hour of listening in a day but at lower volumes.

These speakers are not super efficient. 90dbs at 1watt.

I spent 20 years in the Navy working on the flight deck of aircraft carriers. Being 20 feet away from jets at Military (takeoff) power or stage 5 after burner brought real pain and damage to my ears. I'm not complaining, just offering a word of advice to younger ears: take care of them. If you enjoy music now, you're going to enjoy it when you get older. I'm sure there are many passages in music I do not hear and it is a loss I can never recover from.

The quality of the gear we use will lull us into a false sense of the real volume we are listening at. Don't take me as an old fuddy duddy! I like to crank it every now and then as I did when I was younger too. Just as in everything, moderation is the key!

Off my soapbox.

Gordon

Gordon.......Good words of advice for 2112. I live with a 6 KHz ringing in both ears from several years of aircraft carrier flight deck duty. As an Intereior Communications Electrician there were many systems on the flight deck that kept us up there. I usually wanted duty on the flight deck for the extra pay. If I wasn't helping maintain the Fresnel Lens system, or doing duty operating the PLAT camera on the 07 level of the island, it was doing emergency repairs on sound powered telephones or the PA system. F8 Phantoms in full after burner roaring down a catapult creates serious noise levels. The Navy issued ear protection was not up to the task by any stretch of the imagination.

Having said all that, 2112, protect your hearing from long term exposure to sound levels above 95 dB. As good as McIntosh sounds, listening through a pair of hearing aids will most likely spoil the performance, if you can hear it at all. Trust us on this.

Dan, I guess I lucked out. I have no ringing or tinusitis (sp). I'm just dead in several frequencies so I feel fortunate.

I always liked the F8 and the F4. Nothing like being between Cats 1 & 2 when the F4 went into burner Cruised on Forrestal, Midway, Ranger, Coral Sea, Lexington and a couple of the Nucs.

Ivan, I give up! I'll never catch your post count and this is the most I've ever posted anywhere in this short amount of time!
