+1 on the BGE. Just got the medium size and the wife and I love it. You can cook so many things on it. Well worth the money.

Lump charcoal is the only way to fly. Don't buy the BGE brand. It's priced 2-3 times what you can get it for. I buy 20 lb bags for less than $15.
Charcoal pellets have additives to keep them burning that "flavors" the food. Completely unnecessary and not recommended. With lump charcoal in a BGE you can keep a pork butt going for 18 hrs or more for awesome pulled pork. Incidentally, I use a chimney starter to get it going. My old paper sleeves serve well as igniters.

From what I remember royal oak natural lump makes/made the charcoal for BGE. I can usually lay hands on it at Sams or GFS . I would stay away from cowboy as some scrap lumber finds its way in there.

Pellets are not flavors but wood with which you cook. The exception is Traeger pellet which are flavor oils added to alder. Proper pellets such as BBQrs Delight are oak and the designated wood combined, exactly what you would do if you were using logs. It a beautiful thing that even I can pull off. What size butt would anypne do for 18 hours? At 175 you'd be at 205 in 12-14 hours for a 6-7 lb butt. Why would you need 18? |

I use a Weber silver genesis with four burners. Nice but not quite big enough for what I want which is grill a hogzilla all at once.
I did build my first one with bricks and got a custom grill made but when full it was so hot you couldn't reach the middle of the grill or your elbow joint would fuse from the heat! howie |
