I have discovered Sonos recently while passing by a specialty store on the way to Officeworks. No need to have a PC tethered to every system in the house just to play some music.

I have the non-modified version. Just wondering if range is an issue with the W4S ones ?

Regards,
Joe Ling

Today, I went to a very reputable A/V custom installer. As a Dyed in the wool, Apple Guru, I was very impressed.

Still, Airplay does all these features. Now, a high resolution Sonos would decimate all!

I bought a Sonos about six weeks ago and it has completely changed the way I listen to music - just love it. I have had a NAS for a long time but only for the purpose of backing up the several PC's in our house. That means all our music was on it. So as soon as the Sonos was plugged in we had simple access to our entire library. Then add streaming radio and services like MOG and it's magic. It's almost too easy to change the music you're listening too and bounce around all over the place like my teenager with the car radio.

However there were times I didn't like the sound. Too harsh, compressed, thin. After some burn-in it was better, but some music still disappointing. I tried all variations of hook-up to find the obvious - the spdif out to a DAC is best. Sonos has their own forum which is pretty good except the people can get super defensive if you are trying to find ways to improve the sound. They have an explicit belief that higher rez files, that they don't support, aren't necessary anyway. It goes deep.

Anyway this week I ordered the W4S modded version which I received today. I still have the stock version and will do an A/B test in a couple weeks after sufficient burn-in. I can't give any immediate impression because I have a stinking cold at the moment and all of life sounds foggy today.

More later,

JR

John... Feel better; the modded Sonos will crush the standard one.

JR,
You may already know this but.... Make sure you have the volume set to fixed or turned all the way up on your Sonos going to your high end system for the best sound.

Also, where did you get your W4S?

With separate music servers installed in each of my two primary sound systems, both completely loaded with all the music I own, I have no need to stream from a server or NAS hard drive to a second or third system. My only purpose for the two Sonos zone players I own is to stream Internet radio if I wish and audition new music on MOG. That's all MP3 data streams to begin with, so improving wireless streaming from other data storage devices to my systems through a Sonos box serves no useful purpose for me. Quite frankly, I rarely use the two Sonos ZP90's or the Sonos Connect amp that drives my speakers on the pad under my house. That's why I continue to pass on the W4S upgrade. I have no need for it.

Mike, yup, I learned that and it definitely makes a difference for the better. It's a funny inconsistency amongst the Sonos diehards who say the box does a bit-perfect transfer of data from your NAS to your processor so there is no way it is degrading the sound - but wait a minute did you set the volume control to fixed otherwise the sound is degraded? I decided not to try to open that argument on the Sonos forum on their site and just look like a troublemaker. There is something going on in there that can be improved - which also explains the aftermarket solutions to the problem.

Dan, wouldn't the W4S upgrade, or any other mod, help on any music passing through the Sonos? It's not going to just apply to tunes being streamed from a NAS or other file source. My guess is that you have such great DACs that they are taking care of any Sonos deficiencies, but others of us (well, me) aren't as well DAC'ed so we hear the flaws.

I think you just invented a new word "Well-en-DACed"
