If so what would you think the main diff is going to be as far and being in perfect synergy with the rig you have now?

What are the gains and take a ways from your perspective?

I just can not imagine moving away from the SF Aida's! The SF Aida's are a HELL of a great unit, and yes those Focal's are amazing, but it is like Cab or Cab Franc? Both Cab, one a little drier...

Love to get your take on the why's
Dave... First, I'm totally pleased with the Aida's in this system. I have not listened to the Utopia Grand EM's recently in any system, although the previous iterations have always impressed me. I have also lusted after them for way too many years to count.

One strong motivational factor is that I'm seriously considering the Focal line, which would entail displaying a few of their Utopia models.

Anyway, obviously their home line is a whole different animal, but I'd just watch out for any brightness.

BTW, one pair I did hear was hooked up to Burmester gear FWIW.

Yup, that would be a deal killer if they are excessively bright.

Yes I have built many a system with their Driver's Ivan, they are very nice, IMOP they are not way to bright, but they are similar to a top end Dynaudio in that the mids are a little more laid back and the highs I little more forward.

Now for me I like that sound, but the Mid section in the SF Aida's! is amazing and I think that part of the overall system wins out.

I think for long term listening the SF Aida's! are easier a tad on the ear, but the 1st impression with the Focal drivers is going to seem very very open, a tab bright, but the imaging is their strong suit on a similar pair I heard at the Show in New Port... Best for you buddy!

This would be in my Burmester rig in the Cape. Don't say yes just for the sake of spending money; let me hear your logic.

Thanks

Yes! For the simple fact that variety is the spice of life and if you have the chance to sample some new fruit, you should.

Psychologically speaking, the grass is always greener, at least until you get there. Audibly, who knows, it may be a step down.

Isn't half the fun trying new equipment and tinkering?

Ivan, I was going ask why you would want to make the switch. And your reasons above are valid.

For me personally I would not make the switch as I have auditioned Focal many times and have never heard anything that moved me enough to want to keep listening or purchase their products. Even though I have not personally heard the Focal Utopia Grand EMs, the Focal signature sound would still be there.

Also have heard SF many times and always liked what I heard, especially in the mid range.

If I was to try something new in a real high end it would be a Genesis 1.2, which is real unique.

The bottom line is that you have lusted after the Utopia Grand EMs. Take a listen and if this is the sound you lust for than make the switch. If it is for a business reason you should be able to obtain a feel from this thread and forum what people think about Focal to assist in determining if you should carry their line. I think you need to decide if it is more for your pleasure or more for you business and the decision will be easier.

One thing is certain you will find somebody here to purchase you Aida's if you choose to make the switch.
