Default "new" mc75

Frankly, I am not sure how I feel about this. Nice to see the latest technology be used to update the classics but on the other hand, where is the true innovation? Craig

From their site ---
The MC75 mono vacuum tube power amplifier delivers modern performance standards in a classic design. It has all the features to meet the needs of today’s music enthusiast. As with all McIntosh mono amplifiers, the MC75 will provide ultimate stereo separation with each channel utilizing a separate amplifier. 75 Watts of power is output into a 2, 4 or 8 Ohm speaker with less than 0.5% distortion.

McIntosh’s patented Unity Coupled Circuit design provides low distortion, extended frequency response and long tube life. The MC75’s large, oversize power transformer provides unusually high power and dynamic response from a single pair of KT88 output tubes, once again setting the performance benchmark for tube amplification.

Balanced and unbalanced inputs combined with power control allow matching with all contemporary McIntosh preamps and processors. Sentry Monitor tube protection circuit will ensure the MC75 will have a long and trouble free operating life. Contact your local dealer to learn more

Craig.......The MC75 tube power amplifier is more about the evolution of a benchmark amplifier design than it is about astounding innovation. Just like it's bigger brother the MC275, the MC75 does have some unique advancements for those of us who have owned and loved McIntosh tube amplifiers through the years. One of the biggest "innovations" for the MC75 is the McIntosh Sentry Monitor circuit that will instantly shut off the amplifier should an issue with the power tubes arise. This is extremely important and a welcomed advancement in McIntosh tube amps because a power tube failure can easily wreck havoc on other parts of the amplifier if the voltages remain present during a power tube failure. Another improvement in the MC75, as well as the MC275, is the inclusion of remote power control. Now the amps can be connected to the preamp with a power control cable and be turned on and off with the single Standby button on a McIntosh preamplifier.

The MC75 tube power amplifier is an amazing mono power amp with a oversized power supply. While maintaining its classic design the amplifier has been modernized to meet the requirements of today's demanding owners. This also includes balanced and unbalanced inputs. In addition to the features already mentioned, the MC75 has an incredible 110 dB signal to noise ratio below rated output. That is a large improvement over the original MC75 (90 dB signal to noise) manufactured from 1961 to 1970. The improvements over the original design represent quite an upgrade and are a testament to the close tolerance parts presently used and the larger power supply.

I am not sure what you were hoping for when you asked, "where is the true innovation?" In my humble opinion the new MC75 with its polished stainless steel chassis, large speaker terminals, and many other advanced features over the original make this amplifier a true gem. In addition to incorporating the traditional and patented McIntosh transformers, the newest MC75 delivers a healthy dose of modern conveniences that make it a highly desirable audio component.

All fair points Dan. Perhaps I did rush over the new technology they have developed and are using to update this legend and may be considering esthetics as part of technology. I admit, I wouldn't mind having a pair on my upper panels for a while.

Having said that, I still wonder if they could have pushed or refreshed the overall design. I love the longevity of the brand and recognize they have a 'brand' which is largely based on ageless design. But when, if ever, will that end?

How about a MC75 that has the same look as the MC2301?

I would love them to make a barebones tube preamp that looked more like the mc75. Exposed tubes and metal!

Craig.......So what you actually meant by innovation was aesthetics. You want McIntosh to look different.

If I were a world renowned prestigious audio manufacturer with nearly 70 years of treasured history building fabulous audio gear that is instantly recognizable even from across the room and 50 years old or brand new, why would I want to destroy that noble heritage and brand recognition to become just another incognito box that's unrecognizable until you're close enough to read some manufacturer's name?

For me the answer is simple, I wouldn't.

If they would have departed too much from the original as far as style and looks, it wouldn't be an MC75 re-release any longer. The modern additions and upgrades to this classic design, all while maintaining the original character & look is fantastic IMO. +1
