I loved the Telarc recording of “The Four Seasons” led by him and the BSO. One of the first cd’s I owned, probably 1984 or 1985.

A great conductor and a loss for sure, but I wouldn't say he made the BSO - in fact he was quite controversial. I grew up in the Boston area and was in music school (Berklee) when Ozawa took over the BSO. I remember his performances often received mixed reviews and he alienated many of the orchestra's musicians. He had a number of good, successful recordings, but also many unimpressive ones. He was certainly there for many years, but there were ups and downs. I think if anyone "made" the BSO, my opinion would be that that distinction falls to Serge Koussevitzky, who was there almost as long as Ozawa but was the conductor that ushered the orchestra into the modern age as the first conductor to start live symphony radio broadcasts and the founder of Tanglewood, among other accomplishments. Just my opinion and no offense intended.

I must confess ,I am a dilettante when it comes to classical music. I wouldn't know a bad conductor from a chimp. However back in 76 this was fab and being on Deutsche Grammophon it was legit.
