I just found this thread and wanted to know the difference between the MPC500 and MPC1500. I have the 500 and was considering the move to the 1500. Thanks

Yes it is MOV based. The MOV will burn itself if a large enough surge hits the unit. It will also decay over time and become less effective. I would expect a microprocessor controlled relay from a unit at this price point.

1500 has a large isolation transformer which is ideal for common mode noise reduction. That’s why it is much heavier and expensive. It also has a microprocessor controlled relaying for protection.

I am going to upgrade in the near future to the 1500. I live in an area that gets a lot of lightning storms. I tend to unplug my system during those periods. Just yesterday we had lightning all day.
