I agree. I once had a Fons CQ30 with attached dust cover and I altered it slightly so that the cover came off completely before use. It did make a difference (to my ears.)

Gingko makes great turntable vibration conntrol devises, dustcovers and tonearm display cases. Just purchased 2 tonearm display cases--one for my VPI 12.7 and one for my VPI 3D arm.
Highly recommended company. Also, Vin Vuh and Norman Ginsburg are stand up guys that have now gotten into components and speakers which I am looking forward to hearing.

When I bought my Scout I got one of those $80 covers that have open ends. Well I didn't like that at all. I ended up ordering one hand crafted from an eBay vendor and that was very nice.

I have since bought a 2nd wand and I made my own cover for a storage base for that. It turned out OK but havre learned how to do a better job if I ever get around to doing it again.

I have read this too, and in fact it is even mentioned in Robert Harley's book. So, this weekend just for fun, I played around with this using my KAB SL1200. Cover on, cover off, played the music loud (~110 db on the peaks using a Realistic SPL meter). Nothing. No difference. My house is built on a solid concrete slab and my table is an extremely solidly built laboratory table. I would think that this phenomenon would vary with house construction, dimensions and acoustics of the room, and so on.

In a dusty environment or one with pets, smokers and such, I would recommend that the cover be left on if at all possible. This is one of those things that seems to be situational dependent.
