I own the four 2-CD box sets the review below refers to.
This album can be considered as 'greatest hits'.
These pieces have never ever bored me, and I've been listening hundreds of hours to Marais, Sainte-Colombe, Abel and the likes.

Once again, Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe’s music works its magic. Fearing neither expression nor a wide vibrato (which is never too methodical or simply there for decoration), Susie Napper and Margaret Little offer a selection of pieces taken from the complete recording of Concerts à deux violes esgales, recorded in Quebec City in 2003 and 2004. Le changé, Le tendre, L'attentif, Le Tombeau des regrets and L'estourdy are all like insights into the soul.

Found post-mortem in the papers of pianist Alfred Cortot, the manuscript of these sixty-seven concerts is a balanced dialogue between the two instruments, almost like a conversation between cultured friends philosophising about existentialism. The fascinating music ranges from deep introspection to dance, all the while retaining a certain spontaneity.

This psychological musical portrait, like an equivalent to a painter’s portrait, is perceptible throughout and perfectly illustrates the personality traits - and probably the physical traits too - of the characters illustrated here. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Ensemble 415 was a remarkable group of Baroque musicians - founded by Chiara Banchini in 1981 and, unfortunately, dissolved in 2012.

This recording is wonderful and is made even more so because it was a gift from a very dear friend who, along with his wife, visited me and my wife a couple of weeks ago. What a treat having those folks here.

Thank you so much, dear friend. (A friend who just happens to be a regular contributor to this thread.) Thanks for the visit and thanks for this group of recordings.




The ensemble is noted for its performances of Italian Baroque string music on period instruments. Banchini was one of the very best Baroque violinists performing at the end of the twentieth century, and the ensemble is at its best performing concerti featuring their director as soloist. Their performances of music such as Vivaldi, Corelli, Boccherini, Muffat, and Tartini offer an opportunity to hear less well-known Baroque repertoire by composers who were very well known during the eighteenth century.

Playing this set again into my practice.
Over 7 hours of very well played baroque.

Born in Seoul, Korea, Mr. Kim immigrated to the United States in 1995. His father possessed a keen ear for music despite no formal musical training and introduced him to the cello through VHS tapes of Pablo Casals playing the Bach’s Solo Cello Suites. Learning by imitation, the seven-year old was awarded a full scholarship to the Juilliard School within the year. So began his professional training at Juilliard, but it was not until he met world renowned soloist and pedagogue Janos Starker the following summer that he became certain music was his calling. Attending a New York City public school, learning to speak English, and adjusting to life in the United States was not always easy. Starker’s invitation to come study with him was pivotal, inspiring the young cellist to continue with renewed motivation. Starker later remarked, “Jonah is an exceptional talent. He is at the top of his generation.”

Yes, I found five albums on Tidal and one on Qobuz of Jonah Kim.

Very nice performances, although Schiff can occasionally get just a little carried away with his embellishments.
