Anxious to hear what you think of the AVM 70
I have had the AVM70 for about half a year now. I think it's the best sound I have had in my home theater.

I don’t think you can lose with any of these. I’ve heard the Anthem and MX 100 in a few systems. IMHO, they are both quite good. Personally, I’d love an MX100 to match up with my C2600.

If one were to use an external DAC, how would the C2700 compare to the C1100?

LewL, the C-1100 was meant to compete with other manufacturers flagship or reference pre. You could ask that question therefore about any gear less than flagship level of any manufacturer, and it would be an opinion based on the responder, i.e. the manufacturer, a person who has owned both gear, etc. It's impossible to say, there are so many variables. I would give the edge to the C-1100 because it is a two box all out no compromise design bested only by the C12000, and could be used with a MCD12000 or D1100, most likely the new MCD12000.

With a 2700 you have the advantage of using an excellent external DAC that you can easily compare to the DAC2 Module. I think this offers an excellent alternative to the above. I like the idea of pairing a 2700 with an expensive external DAC a lot and using the DAC2 Module as your built in reference.

Best

Charles

Hi LewL,

I'm have not owned or even heard a C 1100, but given the differences in price and design, I would be surprised if it did not sound significantly better than the excellent C2700.

To go to the related question on the external DAC--you might also consider the C22. It has the same pre amp architecture as the C2700, but no DAC.

if I had a fixed budget for all of the above, I'd go C22 and spend the balance on the DAC. (Just guessing on your budget, you might check reviews on Berkeley Alpha and dCS Bartok) I think the difference in DAC is likely a larger difference than the difference between pre amps on a dollar for dollar basis.

I can't speak for the C2700 specifically; but, I did upgrade from its predecessor (C2300) to the C1100 and I absolutely feel it was worthwhile. The phono stage was, IMO, the biggest upgrade. That said, across the board, the noise floor was dropped and the imaging improved.

I also had opportunity to compare the C2300 with a previous flagship model (C100) and the C100 was a winner there as well. If you haven't had a chance to experience a flagship pre from McIntosh, you might do yourself a financial favor by avoiding it!

Now, the alert I got today about a used MX100 being avail......he said he woul d a straight swap. I am kind of intrigued by this. The only analog I have is MCD301 and my Rega and they are plugged ito the 2700 right now
I know this thread has been dormant for a few weeks but it is really relevant to my sitituation.
Like the OP I'm at a crossroad I have a mx170 and a bnib avm90. I'm in the process of building a dual use dedicated room. My final hurrah considering I'm 69. I set up the 170 in a 5 channel config. and I must say the 2 channel SQ is the best I have experienced to date. First experience with MC.
Of course my OCD just kicked in and I'm wondering what to do now.
I would like analog pass thru for use with my Lumin U2 Mini into my Modwright Oppo 205. I would consider the C2700.
So I'm hoping the OP could share his experience.

I identify with your situation in some ways. I'm approaching the same age milestone and know that I don't need to jump into a bunch of new gear at this point, especially since I have other, more important purchases to make and the wallet says NO to extraneous moves. Perhaps figure out what you can actually afford and then get the best gear you can for that money. Maybe see how the gear you have performs first, particularly that NIB Anthem. None of the brands you mention are slouches (I have a Furman SPR-20i myself and appreciate the voltage regulation it provides).

Here's a dealer review of the AVM-90, if it helps: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9MKfdyEC6g

As for the 2700, if it suits your needs and you can afford it, go for it. I have a dual-purpose system and built it around good sound. I think that if music sounds good so will movies and concerts; so far I'm right.
