Default Streaming from NAS with Apple TV

On a whim, I decided to see if there was an App that would allow me to access my NAS via the Apple TV. Quickly I found VLC, a free media player that seems to play everything.

In a snap I was perusing my NAS directory and choosing videos to play. It is there I found some oddities.

The setup plays my ripped BluRay discs easily. Clear picture and sound with zero stuttering.

However, when trying to play some of my GoPro video from my races or any DVDs, they all skip, pause and stutter like crazy.

Why would that be??? BluRays have far more data than my DVD tips... WiFi signal is very strong. Is there another media player that would work better than VLC and available for Apple TV???

System is:

- Synology NAS upstairs connected to my Router

Downstairs
- Apple TV connected via WiFi to my Router
- Plasma TV connected to Apple TV via HDMI
- Optical Digital Out from TV to my Lexicon MC1.

While I am not an expert on this, you might try downloading a program called “Handbrake”.

There are some video encoding options that are difficult for an Apple TV to decode. Rip your GoPro videos using Handbrake to an Apple TV compatible format. There are templates available in the program for this. I have used this to rip in car race videos with great success.

Have you tried Plex?
Plex May even have an app that you can install in your NAS. It will play movies and audio.

Hmm, I hadn’t thought of converting my GoPro videos to an Apple friendly format. Might be worth a try. I will look into that. Thanks!

That looks to be a good option that does more than simply play Your Media. Thanks!!

There is a Synology package for Plex, but you might also consider Synology’s own Video Station package. There’s an Apple TV app that connects to it called DS Video.

Plex is a nice app. Of course they will encourage you to move to their premium service.

It does sound like you have a transcoding issue (so pre-converting your files should help). Plex is very good at transcoding but note that 'on-the-fly' transcoding is very processor intensive.

Default Streaming from NAS with Apple TV

I played around with PLEX.

First, I installed the PLEX server on my Synology DS214+ but it does not have enough processor speed to handle all that goes on. It worked for some videos but not all.

Then I installed it on a Win 10 PC on my network and pointed it to my NAS directory. That seems to work much better and it even found DVDs I have on a USB hard drive connected to the NAS. This is powerful as I have over 9TBs of DVDs on Ext drives.

However, there are still a number of videos it will not play which I made about 15 years ago. They were from a digital Video recorder and then transferred to PC using a software which I CANT REMEMBER... So now I trying to use Handbrake (steep learning curve for me) to see if it will re-encode those videos or otherwise ‘fix’ them. But PLEX is the answer for me.

What is the advantage of the Premium version of Plex??
