My Celestron C80 (80mm) refractor has a 900mm focal length. I have two Plossl ocular eyepieces, 26mm and 7.5mm. So, I have two magnifications; roughly 35X and 120X. I almoset prefer the lower power eyepiece, as the image is far brighter, and the viewing aperture is much larger. I do also enjoy some deeper space observations as well, the pleiades cluster, and the like.

Obviously a 7-9" aperture would be great, but a refractor in this aperture range will be pretty expensive. Putting photography aside, (for the moment) how much benefit do we see when we jump from say, my 80mm Celestron to say, a 130mm aperture scope? I do like the bright sharp images a refractor can provide, while not being too large to store like the larger apertures.

Pete
Aperture counts for a lot to be sure. Some opt for a Schmit-Cass say like C14 which to me is jack of all trades and master of none. This type of aperture will afford excellent views of the planets/moon when seeing permits.
General rule: refractors of apo quality are the best for the planets/moon/solar work. Deep space( dark sky site is a must) stuff like galaxies Schmit-Cass/Newtonian/Dobs do really well. If you fancy doing deep space photography then go for as much aperture that you can get, of course you'll need a really good EQ mount to track. I would recommend a Meade or Celestron Schmit-Cass.

Going from your Celestron C80 to something like my Tak setup you would experience a huge improvement in resolution for the planets/moon.
The C80 is a achrochromatic doublet lens cell & mine is a apochromatic triplet lens cell plus my mount is way better than yours- no offense.

No offense taken...the mount is very important as is the aperture; though I've never considered the mount on my C80 to be too bad.

I've always looked at the C14 as a great scope, though pretty expensive with a good tracking mount and it would be problematic to store in my place, as large as it is. It would have to be a great scope for deep space though, with a 14" aperture and very long effective length.

You've answered my question pretty well...since the moon and planets are what I view most often.

This is another great and very fun hobby, and you can spend a good coin on it too!

Last time that I checked( about 4 years ago ) Celestron was selling a package deal for the C14 that included a Losmandy clone EQ mount & tripod for around $6500.00.
In the astronomy hobby there's always some little gizmo that captures your attention as a "must have item". You need more than 2 eyepieces- Tele-Vue makes pretty good Plossols.

That doesn't sound too bad for a good C14 setup. I can't do any upgrading now but that's never stopped me from exploring the possibilities...

You're definitley right, I need some more eyepieces, and a solar filter!

For white light viewing of the sun check out Baader Solar Safety Film. You can either order the film and make your own cell or you can buy a dealer made cell with film. The only thing that beats the Baader film for white light solar viewing is the Baader Herschel Wedge Prisma- I have one .
I like Kendrick for Baader Film. Their in Canada: KAI - Solar Filters

I have a Takahashi refractor & EQ mount as well. I use the Takahashi extra long wooden tripod vs the pier. I like to be a bit more mobile & the pier would require a hard flat surface vs regular ground- mine works well on all surfaces so I use some vibration discs when it's set up on my back deck or in the driveway outside of my garage.

Here's my Takahashi TOA 130 the EM-200 USDlll mount with the extra long wooden tripod:
