Dan,
since you have no more interest for the PH7, I hope that this disgression does not bother you too much !

Jérôme.......No problem. I would have stirred the thread back on topic if I needed more information. Your turntable discussion with Philippe would have made a nice thread on its own, though. Burying a second interesting discussion in an alternately titled thread makes it difficult for others to find it and join in.

Well, I have an on topic question and hope for some response...

I have a mid production of the ARC PH-7 (2008), and considering the PSU upgrade (replacing two 6H30 with one 5881). Is this a good value for money upgrade, or..?
Anyone with experiance on this matter?

Thanks,

Sven

Sven.......Welcome to Audio Aficionado.

I can't help you with your question, but there are a number of Audio Research owners here, so hopefully someone will jump in with a helpful comment.

Sven, it's not a matter of whether the psu upgrade is good value, but rather its a mandatory upgrade to avoid premature failure of the 6h30 power supply tubes. It seems that the 6h30 is not up to the task of power supply regulation on a long term basis and they will fail earlier than their normal lifespan. The 5881 replacement is a robust tube and more up to the task of voltage regulation. In my ref cd 7, two 6h30 power supply tubes failed taking with it a couple of diodes.

Dafos, thanks for that important info. I've been in contact with my dealer, and the PSU upgrade kit is ordered.
