Great thread everybody. Never under estimate the value of routine maintenance on anything mechanical. Speaking of which, I should have a look at the C-1.

I just got a new Prime Signature and it was sounding terrible. Nobody could hold a note. A tech came out and cleaned dried out gunk out from the platter shaft and lubed it. Sounds great now. My question is should this be present on a brand new TT or did a used platted get slipped in by accident. Can the lube get dried out just sitting in the box? I have reached out to my dealer to look into this.

It's not that complicated. You need to remove old lube and put in new lube.

It is especially important in inverse bearing tables as the tip of the bearing will not be able to maintain lubrication without proper maintenance given that gravity will inevitably pull the lubrication downwards.

Thanks for the reply. The maintenance looks straightforward. My question is should I be concerned that a 2 day old TT needed what appears to be annual maintenance, filled with old crud and not working correctly out of the box. Wondering if the lube dries out even if not used or installed. Thanks!

I believe it can dry out

I don’t think there’s a big difference between running and not running. 33 1/3 revolutions per minute are not disintegrating these lubricants any more than age.

Appreciate the comments and suggestions. I can't find much information on platter issues with new VPI TT's. In fact, the instructions don't recommend lubrication when you first put it together. Pull the tape off and pop it on the spindle.
Anyway, all is well and I am very happy with it. Beautiful piece and wonderful sounding.
Thanks
