Ellis does indeed stick to the blues during the original eight selections yet there is also a surprising amount of variety. This CD reissue has been augmented by four numbers from 1958 originally recorded for a European soundtrack. Getz, Eldridge, and Coleman Hawkins all have their features but Dizzy Gillespie fares best.

Herb Ellis

Roy Eldridge

Stan Getz

Ray Brown

Stan Levey

Norman Granz

Enjoyed this one earlier

Dinosaur - To the Earth
Edition Records (2020)

From the Guardian:
“[Laura] Jurd seems unconcerned by transient fashions or enrollment in any kind of scene, and pursues a private muse that draws on jazz, folk traditions from Europe and the Middle East, and the harmonic language of Stravinsky – yet her work is always spiritedly accessible, and often suggests wordless songs. To the Earth is Jurd’s third release with her Dinosaur quartet, a closely bonded ensemble embodying the jazz axiom that composition and improvisation are an inseparable two-way stretch.”

Chris Potter - There Is A Tide

For some unexplained reason I seem to have overlooked this talented musician.

His latest 2020 release features 12 different instruments played by Potter himself!

The result is a technically impressive and fine album, but a bit smoothened down, guess by the C-19 nature of confinement recording, somehow lacking some of that magic sparkle when musicians are jamming together in a studio?

Chris Potter - Alto Sax, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Flute, Alto Flute, Piano, Keyboards, Acoustic Guitar, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, Drums, Percussion
