I don't think I've ever played more than one at a sitting and have really never compared performances - I like all that I have - but have always thought the Chicago/Reiner and the NYPO/Bernstein were my favorites. Maybe I should do a comparison.

Hi, Julian. Actually, the Telarc/Mackerras set is the only one I own for Scheherazade. Gramophone also recommends the Gergiev, but I know some here do not care for it much. I'm sure the Reiner is excellent. If you do the comparison, please let us know what you think.

Boyce: Symphonies Nos. 1-8, Op. 2, The English Concert, Trevor Pinnock



William Boyce was an English composer from the 18th century. These eight Symphonys (his own spelling) aren't symphonies in the modern sense, but a collection of overtures for theater pieces and court odes. The music is delightful and the performances are crisp. Top-shelf Archiv redbook CD sound.

Enjoying this again. These "Symphonys" are always a joy to listen. An unexpected British baroque music gem.

Listening to . . . Holland Baroque Society Meets Rachel Podger

Antonio Vivaldi - La Cetra - 12 Violin Concertos, Opus 9

A Channel Classics two disc SACD gatefold set.

Typical of Channel Classics and of Rachel Podger - the music, the performances and the sound quality are excellent. 12 more of Vivaldi's violin concertos - I read that Vivaldi wrote 763 concertos, over 200 of which were violin concertos - and most of them quite listenable. This is a nice selection of 12 of the most tuneful.
