Hi all - I just purchased a directstream dac should have in a week or so.
I'm very new to using a DAC and digital streaming. Do I need something like Roon to stream tidal to the DAC? My DAC has the Bridge II network card. I don't have a local digital musical library to speak of so my intention is to subscribe to tidal premium (or something else?) and stream over my local wired network to the DAC. I have a ESX server I use and if I need to install any software I'm hoping I can run it as a VM and not dedicate a physical PC. I know these are basic questions so thanks in advanced. |

The Bridge II has it's own software mControl developed by the makers of the Bridge II plug in card and it is all you need to stream Tidal, Qobuz, Spotify and Internet Radio along with an IOS or Android device.

mControl is adequate to get started, is included with the Bridge II, and sounds pretty good. However, the interface is not very good. Roon is far better and you should be able to get it to work on your server as long as it’s on the same network.
Tidal is good and their library is terrific, but I think Qobuz sounds significantly better. The Qobuz high res tracks are much more natural and preferable to MQA on Tidal. I use both interchabably on Roon but prefer Qobuz. The DSD DAC is superb, you’re going to love it. What’s the rest of your system? |

Thanks JR - I'll check out Qubuz. Do I need Roon to control Qobuz?
My system is PrimaLuna Dialog HP amp and Dialog Preamp. I have an old Denon DP-47F turntable with a new DL-103R cart I just put on a couple of weeks ago. Standard power cables, bluejeans interconnects. My current speakers are hivi swan diva's that I had for about 10yrs but I have a pair of Sopra No.2's coming to my house in 2 days! I updated my signature with my system but I must have missed something because it's not showing up. |

You don't "need" Roon to control anything. mControl will do anything you want to do including controlling a server. Qobuz, like Tidal and Internet Radio are built into the app once you sign up for the services using the desktop apps. Using Roon is an option and involves a preference for a particular interface but also requires extra gear and cost that is not necessary for someone just getting started.

That is correct. mControl will get you started as soon as you receive your DSD. Roon is just a far superior interface.

I Just purchased my lifetime subscription to ROON. I had the Aurender with the conductor app. but ROON Core is better. My listening sessions are much better and longer with ROON. I just hope they stay in business longer than the 4 years it will take to break even on the annual subscription . My bridge II should be here by tomorrow.

I got it working correctly! It was the old Gateway PC that I used for Roon Server that was the issue. I updated my WiFi, no help. Then I replaced the Gateway with Roon Core on my workhorse ThinkPad and all of the issues disappeared. Way better!
Anyone have a Roon Nucleus server? Now that I see how well Roon works, I’d consider the dedicated Server. At $1400, it seems pretty reasonably priced. Sound wise, I would guess that this or any good computer would sound about the same since the music is served and decoded in the Bridge and DAC. |
