If you want to go $400, I've got a new Grado Master Wood, that has a retail of $1000. It's got 100 hours on it. Perfect condition. PM if interested. Also have a brand new SoundSmith Audio Technica AT440ml. Sealed in the box, never used. $225.

The 440mla is not a bad cart with some of the older vintage tables like the Duals or the Technics SL1200's with stock wiring, as both of these tables sound a bit on the dark side... The extra punchiness of the AT balances it out a bit. I'm anxious to try the Soundsmith and do a head to head.

You might want to think about one of the entry-level Soundsmith cartridges. I think the SMMC-4 sells for around $250. It would very likely compete with cartridges in the $500-600 price range.

You nailed the synergy Jeff. Have you thought of going pro ... .

Seriously, what I love about the AT440mla is that is tracks like a champ. I used to be really bothered by inner-groove distortion but with the 440 I never notice it. Rumor has it that the stylus has a very long life, but I haven't confirmed this first hand.

Now that I have a Clearaudio Maestro, the 440 only gets used occasionally and on less than perfect records, but I am still impressed at the bang for the buck. It would not be out of line to pay up to $200-250 for it, but at $300ish you might have other options. Sadly, I can only comment on components I've owned and can't help on this, although I like my Clearaudio Aurum Beta Wood at about $400+.
