Thx,.. Having said that, I also realize that it is not always that black and white.. but that is what the courts are for, to determine the grey zones.

I have several comments:
Of course health care providers need to be concerned with the ultimate destination and use of the controlled substances they prescribe. To say otherwise just turns you into substance provider, not a care provider. I'm actually thrilled with the new NYS pharmacy reporting website. It's now easier to weed out doctor shoppers and abusers. That combined with in office drug testing has been very effective for my practice. Of course, I've also essentially stopped prescribing opiates anyway because of the nationwide scourge of these drugs. Legalizing drugs will be almost impossible. The war on drugs, especially private prisons, is big business. Look how hard it is to even get pot legalized. |

Quote:
We have seen a recent unprecedented turnabout in the American electorate's attitudes toward some social issues, primarily gay rights and gay marriage. Perhaps drug decriminalization and legalization will be the next turnaround. |

Interesting discussion.
I'll add a few observations of mine. I can admit that, being a medical doctor, I do see a relation Between Big Pharma and doctors, and it is far from healthy. Objective information is scarce. Representatives are giving us pamphlets with often gross lies (cf. vaccination against human papilloma virus, SSRIs, ...). Medical studies are manipulated, cheap and good remedies withdrawn from the market, replaced by so-called better and newer drugs, that after a couple of years only prove to be more... expensive. If you don't dig deeper into some impartial media, which are sometimes hard to find, and not for free like those weekly magazines that flood our mailboxes, you as a physician remain ignorant. In Belgium, 800,000 people are taking benzodiazepines, mostly started during a hospitalization, to "keep them quiet". Fortunately, with the new media, some scandals reach public sooner that before...
