Hope it sounds as good as it looks! I didn’t know that the tube lights can be turned off too. Nice.

It really looks nice. Goes great with the MA1200.

I'm still torn on this unit, I was just going through the manual now and notice it says you need to have firmware updated by a qualified technician. This will 100% be a deal breaker for me this early in the product's release, I've emailed McIntosh to see if they will allow users to perform their own upgrades.

I am confused--why is this significant? Wouldn't your dealer be able to do this prior to delivery?

I suspect the firmware update has something to do with Roon. The Mcintosh Reference Dac D1100 had problems with Roon too. But it is only Roon. All other systems as far as I know work fine. My Aurender N10 Conductor hooked up via USB to my D1100 sounds amazing. . Granted it doesn't have all the bells and whistles that Roon provides but it's all I need. This is something Roon and Mcintosh need to work out. Hopefully this is the fix.

What about another update in 6 months? Or next year?

Confirmed by McIntosh these updates will be for service centers/dealers to install only. Oh well.

This is nothing new, not specific to MCD12000. Same drill with C1100 and D1100 I own, any updates that come along are not routinely provided to customers but rather dealer installation is preferred method to prevent end users from “bricking” their units. No big deal, if you are comfortable during the updates and your dealer works with you, dealer could simply forward the file to you depending on your relationship. These Mc products do not connect to network and automatically download/install new updates. Not sure how many hi-end products would do that - who would want the unnecessary computer components required to make updates easy - Mc doesn’t regularly update firmware on dacs, preamps etc. A/V processor different story.

Agree to disagree I suppose, they used to give out the updates to customers and no longer do. I understand it to some degree, but if people are installing the wrong firmware they found on the Internet that shouldn't prevent the rest of us from performing our own updates. But it is what it is.
