Yep, part of the recent 150 year celebration of the golden spike ceremony.

Easy to see why they changed over to diesel-electric. Keeping one of those steam powered giants running was quite the feat in water, oil &, especially, maintenance.
no doubt and the Challenger (4-8-4) is a beauty in her own right !

I do remember you telling me that ! and with that being said, our family of railroads has what I believe to be the largest Alco roster in the country - 37. Not to mention our CMO, Donny 'C', 'the Alco Doctor' !

I agree that’s pretty cool - here’s a question, the was an engine in the front and one in the back - how do they synchronize speed, push and pull and more so how did the synchronize back in the day?

In todays world it's called 'distributed power' and it's all done via microprocessor technology(radio / satellite) with control being through the lead locomotive controls. very often seen, especially out west, will be head end power, mid-train and a unit on the rear end.

back in the day (steam) it was all done individually with a engineer and fireman in each locomotive. Coordination of movement was accomplished via radio and before that signal via the engines whistle.

The short answer is: There was a certain degree of wheel slippage but for the most part it was like a team of horses... each pulling their own share of weight. For the more technical explanation: http://www.railroad.net/forums/viewt...p?f=9&t=150624
