Botill - there are several inexpensive well-tested endpoints out there. These speak ethernet at the input and USB at the output. Raspberry Pi with Ropiee, Sonore, SoTM Neo, ... even some far more expensive units are based on the Raspberry Pi.

I use the SotM Neo with Roon into a Chord DAC. The SoTM is well made, compact, runs very cool, just works. But does not outperform the Raspberry Pi4 if you want to roll your own and save a few $$ (besides it could be fun!)

USB can be very tricky if you are not familiar with it. Fine details on the circuit board physical layout are very important, especially at the higher speeds - ask me how I know. These can cause all sorts of seemingly random behaviors. From the symptoms above, it may be that the McIntosh system has issues such as these.

Appreciate the feedback. I actually want to move away from Roon and am happy running Roon connected to my MCD using AES/EBU until then.

I had a problem with my MA5300 DA1 and the USB constantly dropping the connection. This problem happened with Roon, itunes and any other platform using USB. Tried a desktop. Tried a laptop. Changed cables. Scratched head on drivers. Never could figure it out, so I switched to coax. Later added a dedicated AC circuit. Gave USB another try and everything worked flawlessly. Then I plugged the McIntosh back into the old AC circuit and the problem re-occurred. Constant USB disconnects. Plugged back into dedicated AC and problem went away. I recreated this over and over. What was the issue? I have no idea. Something on the AC line? Flacky USB implementation?

Any other USB device having issues on the old AC circuit?

Never tested any other USB devices on the AC line. Just know the problem was easily recreated within minutes of switching the outlet. At that point, I was just happy that my problem was fixed.
