Default Oppo 105 or Sony SCD-XA5400ES???

Which Modwright modified player, Oppo BPD105 or Sony SCD-XA5400ES, would have better sound quality (CD or SACD)?

miles - I'm not sure if anyone here on AA owns a ModWright Oppo 105 yet, so I don't believe anyone can directly answer your question in terms of a direct comparison.

I know from speaking with Dan that the modified 95 and 5400ES were very equivalent in performance. The modifications to the 105 raise the bar over the 95, that much I do know. A big part of the difference is related to the newly redesigned external power supply, which is both tube rectified and tube regulated now. The 95 can be retrofitted with the updated power supply, and I would be surprised if that wasn't an option for the Sony as well.

It would be worth sending Dan Wright an email or giving him a call and asking him directly. If you do, please post a follow-up and share what you have learned.

I plan on being able to directly report on a comparison between the ModWright 95 and 105 in my system in the next month.

Here is Dan's response:

Subject: Re: Oppo BPD105 or Sony SCD-XA5400ES

It is actually very close. I would have to say that I prefer the Oppo 105. I am also partial to the fact that it has digital inputs, allowing it to be used as a DAC also. We have a more sophisticated power supply design for the Oppo 105.

Please don't hesitate to call our office with any questions or to schedule a start date.

Sincerely,

Dan W.

I had the Sony and it's a wonderful sounding SACD player! I bought it years before the Oppo 105 made its debut. However, the Oppo offers more flexibility with its digital input and the ability to attach USB drives. And, it's also a video player if that's important to you. I doubt that the Oppo gives up anything to the Sony in sound quality. Just my two cents.

I have the modded 105 and am very happy with it....just wish I could find more time to enjoy it. Went from a Resolution audio GNS modded player, mainly to have the video as well as audio in one box. The RA sometimes won't recognize a disc, and that was annoying. Trying to understand all the features and in particular the ability to use my Mac laptop with it. I'm sure it will come in time...As I have not heard a lot of other units recently I'm not able to comment on it comparatively...just know it sounds very sweet!

I heard from Dan recently - they are close but for 2 channel audio the 5400 still outdoes the oppo. Oppo wins for versatility.
