Default Chiropractors and Acupuncturists - What's your experience

For the past couple of days I've had a nagging neck pain. A lot of people have been recommending seeing an acupuncturist or a chiropractor.

I am generally skeptical of "alternative medicine" but these recommendation come from people who are at least as skeptical as I am.

I thought it would be interesting to hear what AAers who have actually tried one or the other think of either acupuncturists or chiropractors.

In addition to the poll, feel free to tell us your stories.

Alberto

I've never been to an acupuncturist so I can't comment on them, but I've never gotten any real relief from a chiropractor. Others swear by them but not me.

Chiropractors have always put me in more pain. The only time I've had relief from back/neck pain was from a good physical therapist.

I have had luck with Chiropractors whenever I got my hip or back goofed up. I do not use him for maintenance or other issues.

A good Chiro is better than a knife, but therapy aka weight training is also a good follow up too.

You need to build the muscles and the tendons, joints etc stonger.

Also plenty of vitamins and minerals too

There is no such thing as alternative medicine What do you call alternative medicine that works? Medicine.

Chiropractors and acupuncturists are quacks. Both have done a remarkable job misrepresenting and marketing themselves so that they seem legitimate. I don't know about the USA, but over here chiropractic is taught in some universities, which should be to their eternal shame. They should know that if they let these charlatans into their campus, they will pay a price in their credibility.

There is no anatomical basis to their "subluxation" theory impinging nerves and causing illness. Take an X-ray of someone with a claimed chiropractic subluxation, and their spines may very well appear normal. On the other hand, take an X-ray of someone with REAL subluxation (an "orthopaedic" subluxation) and you may very well find them with none of the diseases chiropractors assign to such subluxations.

I completely repudiate their claims of spinal manipulation curing asthma, irritable bowel syndrome, heart disease, high blood pressure, and so on. It is unmitigated BS.

wow that is a sad statement Amfibius

many times joints etc get out of alignment etc.

I am 51, have not been sick since age 18, take many supplements and lift weights 3-4 times a week.

Still squat free weight 500 lbs fr 15 reps and on many occasions from pushing sometimes a little too hard and once I was run over on my Harley from a truck had my ribs and arm reset rather than surgery.

There is a place for a knife and a Med Dr, but that should be the last attempt.

A good friend of mine has a dog that he thought he was going to have to put down because it was losing its ability to use its rear legs and appeared to be in a great deal of pain several years ago. It was really sad to watch, especially considering this dog used to be a high energy dog that was full of life. He took it in for acupuncture and amazingly it's been fine ever since. I even saw her yesterday and she was in great shape. This made me think twice about dismissing acupuncture as quackery.
