my used mc452 or new mc312
Hello! , I read very little about the new 312. I have a 452 and my problem is not the power today, with 200 watts its ok . but I want some of the new line. Sonically I never liked the 302 but never listened 312. Is it a faster and more refined sound than 302? I listened to ma12000 and I really liked it. and i was thinking about mc312 with my c2300.

Your MC452 doesn’t have 200 watts, it has 450 watts. With an MC312 you would be going backwards from an MC452. This is because your MC452 has 150 more watts than the MC312 and your MC452 is quad balanced where the MC312 is not. Also, your MC452 paired with your C2300 will likely outperform the MA12000, but I understand the allure of a one box solution. I would keep what you have. Just my opinion.

The Mc312 is a newer design than the MC452. It has improved overall technologies, better lighting, and more advanced circuitry and components. It's filter capacity is double that of the MC452 providing a 27% increase in Dynamic Headroom for improved distortion prevention and increased bass performance.
Just a few of the improvements. |

Hard to see this as trading up, even with the 312 being newer. Maybe there are other things you could spend the money on to get better bang for the buck?

Have a friend that listened to the 462 and 312 side by side…and couldn’t hear a difference. I owned a 312 and have to say, other than the 1.2kw’s I traded up to, the 312 was the best McIntosh solid state amp I’ve owned (MC302, MC122, MC754, MC7100, MC601, MC501, MC611, MC301). The MC301’s and MC501’s I feel were the closest to the 312.
The 312 is an incredible amp. Just MY experience. Good luck on your decision. No wrong answer whichever you pick.

McIntosh website contrasts the technical differences between the two amps subjectively in their description of the 312. As others have stated, can't imagine that the 312 would disappoint.

A 452 can easily put out over 600 watt peaks and the 302 closer 460 or so. But thats not the question is it. The 312 puts out more because of a stronger power supply and the highs are suppose to be less congested than a 452, but a 452 uses the modern thermal track transistors so thats not the issue. Maybe the Autoformers have been improved. A friend who sells all the amps both new and pre owned says a lot depends on which speakers people use as to whether there is a difference. He says if you are into panel speakers with difficult loads you really want a pair of direct coupled MC 830's. Thats what I use with my XRT 28's and I am very happy. They are rated at 480 watts 4 ohms but I can peg the meters at 600 watts with out the Power Guard flashing. I mormally listen at 12 to 30 watts with 120 watt peaks occasionally. I like having the head roon. makes the listening less fatiguing. The highs were improved measurably over my two channels of my 207's I use until the new amps would arrive.
